This conversation came up again at work with my co-workers who have kids.
How do you backup your photos especially now with irreplaceable kid photos?
Do you just use a external hard drive? Online storage? Ghost backup at home? Back up of a back up? iCloud? Others?
I currently only use a external hard drive but I know they can fail after x years so I'm looking for back up of back up options.

Yes! I wanna know too. I've been using iCLoud for my iphone photos and videos and an external HD for photos on my DSLR. But I'd like to hear about other methods!

we use mozy--i haven't had to retrieve anything (knock on wood) so i can't speak to how easy or not it is to use in those circumstances, but it's very easy because you can schedule automatic backups.

I am looking for a good solution but for now am using the free storage on icloud and the shutterfly app. I do have an external HD but need more options! I'm thinking about making CD's and mailing them to keep at my mom's house.

For those of you that have online storage. Do you ever fear what will happen if they go out of business? These are the crazy things I think about!!!

@regberadaisy: i wish i said we did a lot of research and picked the best one, but honestly it was because we had heard of that service the most, and it was easy to use. i'm sorry i can't be more helpful!

i looked into this for ages. my previous method was 2 external hard drives (and one broke so they do break), but it's SO much work.
auto back up services like mozy only back up things that are on your desktop. so if you delete from your desktop, it's gone.
looking into google's gdrive. online storage is expensive esp since picture files are so big, but it is just what makes the most sense. it would take forever to upload, but i really need to transition to some sort of online storage for my pictures.
i don't think companies like dropbox are likely to go out of business. and google certainly isn't.

dropbox is $20/month for 100gb and google drive is $5 for 100 gb.
i think i am going to start uploading all my pics to google drive....

I've just been using multiple external hard drives as well. I am also going to start sending my sister copies of photos on CDs. I also upload all my good photos on Flickr (that's how my parents view the photos) so I do have plenty online. I would be interested in an online backup of all my photos/docs though.

I just have an external hard drive right now. I didn't realize those could break! For some really important photos (ie our wedding photos), we put a cd of them in our safety deposit box at our bank. Safety deposit box is another option for those considering mailing cds.

I upload all photos to our online photo album service (Fotki). This is how we share photos with my parents and long distance friends too. And we order prints from them as well. We are also planning to burn all of our photos onto DVD as well as back everything up with an external hard drive. Some day. Soon!!

@regberadaisy: awww!! today was actually a GOOD reason why I wasn't online during the workday-- it was my day off and Wagon Sr. took the day off too after a MASSIVE fight last night (which made me miss the postathon, boo), so we had a great day together!! Well, mostly errands, but it was nice to be together.
