R is 14 weeks old and I've noticed waxy buildup lately. How do you clean your LO's ears?

I feel like a horrible parent admitting this, but other than earwax build up I've scraped out with my nail that's close to the outside...I've never cleaned my sons ears. He's 13 months old.

I use a wet wash cloth or sometimes I use baby q tips to get in a bit more.

I just use regular q-tips and clean very carefully. And not very often. Maybe 1x a month?

@Beyond2: I don't clean then either. I feel like it's necessary. If it is too bad or something is wrong his ped will let us know.

Ears are typically self-cleaning; the wax will come out far enough that you can just wipe it out. I hate q-tips...I've seen one too many accidents at work (audiology/ENT office).

I was told never ever to do more than just the outside by the pediatrician. "Never stick anything smaller than your elbow in the ear!" My little guy has very waxy ears, and she said to just leave them alone.

Our pedi just told us to wipe the outside with a washcloth.

We wipe with a washcloth at bath time when needed. We don't stick anything in his ears to clean.

LOL, lest anyone think I'm sticking regular Q tips in my baby's ears!

@locavore_mama: Those are the ones we use too! And not very often.
@Beyond2: You're not the only one - I've used my nails to scrape out ear wax!

@locavore_mama: lol, that's what I use for the outer part too... and to smear diaper cream, and vicks, and everything I don't want on my fingers

@locavore_mama: we use those too.
Most of the wax does work its way out overnight, seems to kind of melt out. But I do use these Q-tips once in awhile.
