I was just reading that China has kept their one-child program. I understand the reason behind it, I just wonder how they enforce it. I'm for less government control, not more, so I wouldn't want something like this instituted in the US.
What do you think about it?

I'm all for smaller government too, and I have a hard time imagining a world where anyone could legislate my family to that degree, but I can understand the reasons for it.

I haven't read much into this, but how do they enforce this? If you have one and get pregnant..what happens?
I get the reasoning, but it just seems a little old school. If the US did this, there would be a lot less people on welfare, and A LOT less unwanted/teen pregnancies due to the fact that when you only get to have one kid...you make sure you really want it right then. If that makes sense?

I wrote a whole paper on this for my human rights class in grad school 10 years ago. As far as I remember, families who choose to have more than one child are fined. It's not like they get thrown in jail, they get taxed.
Either way, while it makes sense given the direction the fertility rate was going, I don't really support taking away reproductive rights.

@MrsTiz: there are fines, forced abortions and a lot of abandoned (girl) babies. It's pretty awful.
I don't think it would help with teen pregnancy because teens are still going to have sex. If they were responsible enough to think about 1 child now vs later I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get pregnant.

I hate it and thinks it's awful, manipulative and tyrannical. I don't even know what I would do if the US instituted something like that. I think it would give me reason enough to move to a different country. I am also for less government.

@sunny: I remember reading the abandoned or (horrifically) aborted girl babies aren't what the government mandates, but rather the steps people take when they want only 1 child and the first one is a girl. It's a terrifying consequence.

Even though citizens are 'only' taxed on it (not saying I agree wth this, I'm also for small gov't) it has some pretty horrendous social impacts. Like @sunny mentioned, the abortions, little girls who are orphaned or left to die. The policy plus 'Little Prince' syndrome is a recipe for disaster.
