Do you find it unprofessional? Do you think it's okay if the news is going for a "young and hip" look? What are your thoughts?
I don't think sleeveless tops or dresses are appropriate in the workforce, let alone on TV for an anchor or reporter. I'm a curmudgeon, though.

it's funny because i read this post while just complaining on IM to a coworker about a girl in our office who dresses so unprofessionally it blows my mind. she is wearing red pleather leggings with a short shirt today. so ya i'm with you, i prefer a more conservative look. the only time i think people should wear sleeveless is in certain industries - like fashion. i have a friend who works at a fashion magazine and everything goes there. but in a normal corporation... i'm not a fan.

@loki: yeah. I guess if it was for a fashion or entertainment channel, I'd have a different opinion on it? For a news channel, though I expect professionalism and with that comes a certain "dress code" in my head.
Then again, I may be one of few who thinks about this because I have a direct tie to TV for my job.

I have actually thought of this often! I love GMA and the men are always in full suits looking very professional, while the weather girl is wearing a short, tight, sleeveless dress, and sky high heels! It rubs me the wrong way for sure.

I don't mind women anchors in sleeveless tops/dresses as long as the top/dress itself is professional looking (wide strap, professional fabric, tasteful embellishments). It bothers me when the overall style of the garment is too casual or "clubby" looking even if it does have sleeves.

I was thinking about this while watching the news this morning, it was FREEZING and they're all sleeveless while the men are in suits. Just seemed odd and not very seasonably appropriate. In warm weather I don't think twice about it though.

@BadgerMom: This! I think it depends on the style of the top. Some sleeveless ones look tasteful, IMO. But, more and more I think many women anchors are dressing in things that are too tight, too much cleavage, too clubby... ANd the makeup!!

Personally I think it looks ridiculous seeing women news anchors in sleeveless tops/dresses during colder or winter months here. The weatherwoman is talking about snow while in a sleeveless top. *shakes head*

It depends. It's not the fact that it's sleeveless, but it also the cut of the top. (This applies to men as well).

I wear sleeveless dresses to work all the time. They look like the first dress @stiletto_mom: linked to. They aren't too tight, they are the appropriate length, and they look great. My office has a dress code and I follow it.

@stiletto_mom: I feel really bad for the guys at my office because they have to wear a shirt and tie even if it's super hot outside. They are allowed to wear golf shirts if the temperature inside gets above 95*. Meanwhile, I get to wear skirts all the time when it's hot out.

For the most part female in anchors in sleeveless tops and dresses look fine and professional. This has a lot to do with the quality of their clothes and overall look- hair, make up, posture and their arms are toned.
Sleeveless that tops and dresses reveal undergarments are NOT professional. Sleeveless tops and dresses that show off cellulite or lumpy arms are distracting and therefore NOT professional.
Shoot me, but that's how I feel. The look is not for everyone, but those that can pull it off still look polished.

As long as the sleeves are thick enough to cover bra straps I don't have a problem with anyone wearing sleeveless tops. When buying outfits for myself, I follow this rule, which I learned from my 7th grade home room teacher: put your pointer, ring and middle fingers together and the strap should be at least that wide to satisfactorily cover a bra strap and any movements it might make throughout the day
I often wear sleeveless tops and dresses to work in hotter months. When I taught up north, there was no ac in my classroom and it would get hot in June. Down south, I'd need a cardigan in my room with the ac on, but outside in the sweltering heat for carpool and recess duty I needed to stay cool!

I rarely think arms and shoulders are unprofessional. I'm indifferent. It's more about the style than the simple sleeveless factor.

I wear sleeveless shift dresses every day for work! I hope people don't think that about me @Mrs. Lemon-Lime:, my arms aren't what they used to be! Eek!!

@stiletto_mom: is she an anchor in the US? I ask because it seems like more of the norm to sexualize women or to see them in skimpier clothing in some other countries (Mexico and Telemundo in the US come to mind).

Throw in a properly fitted women's suit and she would give off a more "sexy powerful" vibe than a "sexy ditzy" vibe.

@mediagirl: I took a picture of a Telemundo anchor in pum pum shorts & halter top not too long ago on my phone. OMG I turned the channel one morning and was so distracted by what she wore that I didn't realize she was speaking Spanish for a few minutes. Our local Miami Fox station has the most glamorous news anchors. They show off their arms, breasts and of course their killer smiles. When Mr. Lime watches the morning news that's what he turns on.
