@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm worried now! I can cope with people thinking I'm unprofessional but not with them thinking my arms are lumpy! Hahaha!

haha some of these outfits I wouldn't think are very professional, either...a crochet knit tank? is it the 1980's again?

As a rule, I think of sleeveless as somewhere between "less professional (than a sleeved option)" and "unprofessional"; but I think some women can pull off a very professional dress that is sleeveless.
I think for the news it's distracting, and that in and of itself is enough for me to say it's unprofessional for news anchors.
This is a weird random fact but someone once told me that news channels don't like to hire women with more than a B cup because boobs are well, distracting I have no idea if this is true, but this thread reminded me of that.

@blackbird: clearly some news channels are ok with assets that distract from the news

@yoursilverlining: typical target demographic for a local news station tends to be females in their late 20s early 30s, and we females often find "sexy" females unappealing in that news context, so while I have never heard of the cup size rule, it makes sense.

I don't think news anchors are professionals like office execs, so I am fine with sleeveless.

I think it's fine. It would be weird to see anchor men in sleeveless tops so I guess a bit of a double standard.

To answer the original question, I have no problem with a sleeveless shift or a sleeveless sweater. A camisole or halter, no way.

@Maysprout: true, but they do wear short sleeve shirts on air when they anchor "on location" sometimes.

@Maysprout: I would be fine with an anchor in a golf shirt, which to me in more mainstream than a tank top on a man.

@looch: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think of polos and such as professional

Never really crossed my mind. I wear sleeveless tops and dresses in the summer months, usually under a blazer or cardigan that I remove when I'm too warm.

@blackbird: I don't think they are unprofessional either, but to me it's the equivalent of a more casual professional look similar to a woman's completely exposed arms.

I'm a curmudgeon. I think armpits (therefore sleeveless dresses) are unprofessional. Maybe its because I work in the food industry and we sweat a lot. I also don't like the look of the morning show hosts. It's like they aren't allowed to wear sleeves or pants.
I blame Michelle Obama... but I'm jealous of her arms.

I don't think there's anything wrong with going sleeveless, it's not like the upper arm is a scandalous body party. I'm 30 and have plenty of sleeveless dresses/tops I wear to work while looking professional.

I couldnt even begin to care if a news anchor had a sleeveless top or dress!

@yoursilverlining: well dang, sounds like me & my B cup boobs have missed their calling
I didn't realize so many people had such strong feelings regarding sleeveless dresses/tops at work. I wear them, especially shift dresses, etc all the time. I'd never wear anything slinky or with small straps, cleavage, etc. And to answer the original question, I feel the same is perfectly fine for a news anchor.

I don't watch the news on TV. I read it in the internet. I really try to ignore TV as much as possible because there are too many commercials.
I have worked in offices though. I tend to run warm. So, I almost always wear layers, and the bottom layer is almost always sleeveless. It's the only defense I have against sweating sometimes.
But while I might sit at my desk that way, I would never attend a meeting or visit a client that way.

@blackbird: see, I don't. To me, a polo/golf shirt is summer business casual. Professional is a suit and tie for a man.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@looch: Ha, oye...our whole company isn't professional, then Even our execs wear polos/golf shirts all the time, though (usually with slacks). I almost never see a suit around here...
