I know ped dentists recommend flossing for toddlers. But how in the world do you do it? I can barely get my LO to open his mouth for 15 seconds to brush it. I can't even imagine flossing!
Any advice?

do they sell flavored floss? I don't think I ever flossed when I was little. I know I never did. My teeth turned out fine!

@artbee: I hear ya! Nail clipping is brutal. Flossing sounds like torture.

you're supposed to use something like this: http://www.amazon.com/FireFly-Kids-Flossers-36-Count/dp/B001U2KP0W
not that i have ever bothered to do it!

@andrea: Oh! That looks so much easier to use than stringy floss. I still don't know how I would get him to let me use those things in between his teeth though! I actually don't know anyone who flosses their LO's teeth. I can see why!

@banana: yes, so far i haven't heard anyone say that they do it yet!

We just started a month ago. She's four. We got samples from our ped dentist's office. They're by Crayola and she has a matching Crayola toothbrush in her favorite color (red) that lights up for a minute while she brushes (so we do the top for a minute, then we press it again to do the bottom for the 2nd minute). She loves that toothbrush.
Anyway, back to flossing... After we used up the Crayola ones from the dentist, we just got some similar ones from Babies R Us. It was like $3 for a bag of 48. She flosses twice a day so that barely will last us a month... I'm due to get more soon. They are flavored and come in four different colors and animal shapes. She loves picking out what color and animal floss pick she'll use. Then she just puts it in between her teeth! It's easy because their baby teeth are much more spaced out than ours. She needs help with the back teeth/spaces though. When she's done, then she has fun throwing it in the garbage! (my 4 yr old thinks everything is so fun these days!! I'm soaking it all in while it lasts! It's a fun age right now)

@artbee: I clipped LO's nails while she was sleeping for the longest time! Would that work for you guys?

@Andrea: yeah I'm not sure how important it is for a 4yr old to floss efficiently at this age, but the dentist recommended it so that it's a routine she'll get used to for later. She might even recommend it for younger kids too... I just don't know because we went to a not-so good dentist before this. I guess it can't really hurt to do it sooner unless the battle is just not worth it. It helps too that LO sees me floss too!

@NYCaliMama: the dentist told us to do it when i first took her at 15 months. i was like "you crazy!"

@Andrea: haha. 15 months is pretty young! Damn... your dentist is hard core! That's great!!

@NYCaliMama: no. She's such a light sleeper. I usually just get one or two nails in every day.
