How do you get your heart set on a name?

I am a bit of a naming fanatic and I have dozens and dozens of girls names that I love. I have a hard time picking a name and not changing my mind a week or so later.

I encounter so many people who name their child a name they picked before they even got pregnant, or a name they picked as soon as they found out the sex. I, however, can't commit!!

DH and I have been wavering back and forth for weeks. We had a favorite, then got cold feet. Finally he just told me that I should pick whatever name I love most.

I am having a crazy hard time. When DD was born we just KNEW what her name would be as soon as we saw her (we came prepared with a list of three names). Maybe that will happen again?

How did you pick a name? How did you know it was the one?

ETA: I have become obsessed with making sure the name sounds a certain way with DD's name. Maybe I'm thinking too hard?

We didn't, until we met her. We went into labor with four names, although we had a front-runner. As soon as we met her we knew that first name was the front-runner for a reason - because it fit her perfectly.

I plan to go into the next baby's birth with a short list as well. I can't imagine naming a baby without meeting them!

DH and I finally agreed on a name we both liked (no easy feat!) and he didn't give me a choice - email blasted it to everyone as soon as we found out it was a girl. I don't regret it, but he never gave me the option to flip flop after that! Next time, I won't agree to anything that early!

I had a dream maybe 5-6 years before I met DH that I had a baby boy and gave him a name. I loved that name and that is what we ended up naming DS.

However, now with DD on the way, we cannot decide. I have a feeling we'll go to he hospital with a short list.

We got to the end with a name in mind but after meeting her decided we'd have to revisit it. That ended up being her middle name and we came up with a variation of one of our older choices for her first.

We did a 4D ultrasound around 31 weeks, and he just looked like one of our names. We still went to the hospital with a short list of names just in case, but it still fit him well. We'll probably do the same thing with #2.

DH got fixated on 1 name... I waffled for months between that one and another one. It was only until we met her that we finalized our choice!

I had a few names but DH loved one the best, which was a miracle, so I wasn't about to try to add different names.

I was the same way! I went through a phase where so many names seemed sooo pretty to me. My list was huge! But after the anatomy scan, I'd narrowed it down to only a few. To weed names out, I ran it through an Asian auspicious name calculator (to match DH's last name) which probably isn't authentic or accurate, but whatevs

By then, only 1 name made it and DH announced that he wanted to start calling her by her name. So I picked the one that was "lucky". There were other reasons, such as the meaning and feel of the name. I wanted her to have a strong name and I felt it was "stronger" than the other name I liked. I've never looked back since.

We had a hard time finding a name we agreed on. B's name was the only name DH loved that I could get on board with. I was never completely sold it on though.

As soon as I saw him I knew it was supposed to be his name. It's crazy how well it fits him.

@lamariniere: that's so beautiful! I had a dream too, even before DH and I got together that I'd have a little girl. Since then, I knew that if we had a girl, I'd give her the name Linnea. But then I found out there's already one in the family and we didn't want a namesake. I still think its a beautiful name ... just one I can't have.

We were team green but had decided on a boy's name. We went into the delivery room with three possible girl's names. That's how I knew we were having a girl all along R's name truly fit her so much that I couldn't imagine her with the other two names.

I had a boys name from the second I got my BFP! We could never agree on a girls name. Good thing we didn't have to

I'm convinced if we had another we would have another boy because I have another boy name that I've fallen in love with.

We agreed on a girls name early on, very easily. Boys name we still didn't have anything we loved going to the hospital (team green). After she was born we still took a few minutes to get to know her before deciding for absolute sure.

If she'd been a boy it would have been way harder!

We had our girl name picked out before we were even married. Before found out we were having a boy, it was a struggle to find a boy name we both liked. When we found one...we never really settled on it for a while...it just didn't click. Then when I found out it was a boy, I revisited the name and worked hard on coming up with his middle name. Once we got his middle name in place it just clicked! I'm in love with his name now.

I think you'll know it when it pops in your head!

I loved the nickname Maddy, and we initially picked Madeline as our girl name! A few weeks before my anatomy scan DH suggested Chloe and I melted. It was perfect!

DH and I were both at work, texting each other potential names for our baby girl. We both texted each other this name at the same time so there wasn't any question that we found the name.

The name we picked was the only one we agreed on. I don't think it would have been my first choice otherwise. But once he was born, I fell in love with both DS and his name! And I'm so happy we went with it

My husband picked it out long before we thought about TTC. He likes scientific names as first names, and this one is very pretty. If we were having a boy, his name would be James Michael, after his father and grandfathers (also what I would have been named had I been a boy).

DH and I had S's name picked out even before we were married. We also picked a boy's name when I was pregnant, but we were set on S, and thrilled that she was a girl. We're a little bummed out that the name is gone, but now we're loving the boy name we had picked out with her. Now we can't think of one girl name we can settle on.

I'm a naming fanatic too. The first time we went into the hospital with three names. As soon as we saw that little bean, we knew which name was hers! The second time it was more of a logic puzzle that locked us into the right name. It was a little harder that time because we knew it was our last time naming and there are so many good names out there... But the logic didn't lie

We were Team Green and had a boys name picked out for years before we even thought about starting a family. Picking a girls name was way harder. I had a slightly crazy set of criteria; not in the top one hundred, historically significant meaning preferably dating back to the medieval period or earlier (I'm a scholar of medieval history). DH deemed everything I picked "too nana" ie. old-fashioned We finally agreed on a shortlist of three and decided in the delivery room, about two hours before she arrived. The name wasn't my front runner, but DH loved it, and in the end it suits her personality way more than my pick. We knew we were one and done so there was a lot of pressure to get it right.
