It's driving me insane. LO is 18 months and today it's non stop whining. She is generally happy but is just walking/running around the house whining. We are trying to encourage her to point at what she wants and say please but just whines constantly instead. For example: she wants to read a book so she grabs one and brings it to us whining. We tell her 'no' and we will only read it once she asks nicely. She will say please but today it's CONSTANT reminding. So, how do you deal with it?

I whine back at her. LOL. seriously though. or I ignore it, unless it's a legitimate issue like stranger fear.

So far saying "no whining" sternly and then redirecting/ignoring further whining is working, thank God since whining is my parenting kryptonite!
Ill also sometimes tickle her or grab her and give her tons of noisy kisses, which makes her laugh and breaks the whining-train.

Seriously...this is a huge problem for us as well. LO is 16 mos and can say many words but chooses to whine a lot. I usually try to ignore it.

I usually walk away and ignore the child. I tell them when they are done whining we can do/have "insert activity/snack/etc here"

I used to tell (still do, when it comes up) DS that I can't understand whining. I told him to go back and come in and ask me in a happy voice.

O M G.... the whining.... the WHINING... My youngest is a huge time whiner. Seriously, the whining king! And he is also the tantrum thrower as well and it used to be multiple times a day; but it has turned into maybe once a week? Although, he's thrown more than just one this week. He drops to the floor (anywhere!) and starts kicking his leg while crying and crying. It's terrible! As for how to handle the whining, I just have to keep reminding him to say "please" or whatever word that helps him get what he wants. I can't wait until he can talk more! He's learning though and I have to be on top of teaching him. Otherwise, I'll hear more "uh uh uh..." ALL DAY LONG! LOL! I remember a time I just wanted to pull my hair out from all the whining. I still do from time-to-time but less so now.

We're not there yet but I like my sisters approach of simply not responding or saying she doesn't understand that voice. It seems to have worked well- negotiating alway seems to lead to more whining!

Hehe. LMW has started with the whining and tantrums (faceplant and WAHHHHHHH) and as annoying as it is, this is my second time through the fire so I find it kind of cute. We either don't respond or let her know it's not acceptable... usually I clap loudly several times and say "no whining" to snap her out of it. It works most of the time.

When she started this a while back, i sternly said, "no whining. if you want something, say HELP PLEASE." Surprisingly, it has worked. The only problem is now she will go "help! help! help!" i guess it's better than whining!

My LO is almost 15 months and whines horribly. I try to find out what it is she wants (snacks, water, milk, ect.) but if it doesn't work I say "LO We do not whine, say please and point to what you want." And she usually does.

Some great ideas. We took the ignoring approach and ended up with a few tantrums. Which lead to a baby time out and a good talking too. It calmed her down for about 10 minutes and then it started again
The only thing I can think that would be bothering her is that we were visiting family on the weekend and she got attention all the time and grandparents gave in to all her whining and now DH and I are trying to give her some independent time. Not going well!

We say "I'm sorry, I can't understand you when you talk like that." Sometimes (he is 2 1/2) we tell him he can go and whine in his room because we don't want to hear it. When he figures out what he wants, then he can come back and ask.

I say, "use your words, please" a TON. And I will also whine back (like Dr. Karp's "toddlerese") - usually he thinks that is funny enough that it snaps him out of it.

ohhh whining is the worst. it's even worse than tantrums for me!
she's 3 now, so i'm able to explain it better to her and she actually listens!! what i say when she whines is that i don't like that voice, and i'm not giving her what she wants until she uses a normal voice and asks nicely. sometimes i'll help her along by telling her what and how she should say something to get what she wants. whining will never get her anything!
