Tantrums are a daily thing over here, I'm pretty good about staying calm but I never know what to actually do. If I should ignore, put into their room/time out, something else? .When your kids are having a tantrum how do you handle it?

If we are in an area that is safe (not the middle of a parking lot) I will either stand or sit next to my daughter and tell her im sorry she is upset and then stay quiet Most of the time within a minute or two the tantrum will turn to crying and she wants hugs and cuddles. A couple times she got really upset and walked away, so I left her alone to deal with her emotions.

I've been trying to channel my inner Janet Lansbury and sit with him and say "I know it's hard when..." he's been snapping out of it pretty quickly.

If she is freaking out a little bit I just try to stay calm, nonjudgmental. Usually a hug helps. I try to encourage her to work it out with words. I tell her "we'll get through this."
She scream cries, that's a challenge when the baby sleeps. She is allowed to cry but i have to ask her to do it quietly or go in the back room.

Not always with grace.....hehehe. I'm working on it.
I (try to) politely tell my 4.5 year old that I really can't understand her...if she persists, I say I won't listen to her tantrum, and ask her to go up to her room until she can calm down. If she refuses, I escort her. For my 2.5 year old, I try to ignore it and let her ride it out wherever she is. Maybe I'm being unfair, but I feel like it's developmentally appropriate for her, whereas the 4.5 year old is old enough to manage her feelings a little bit better.
Both know they can ask for a hug when they're ready to pull themselves together. I'll offer when it looks like they are calming down.

@Mrs. Champagne: @Bao: +1 to Janet Lansbury. DS (3 in March) responds REALLY well to RIE.
