We have friends who have a 7 year old. She is a grumpy little thing. Very rarely is she interested in having a conversation with you. I have tried many different ways to interact with her but she typically tells me that she's busy (she's on her tablet) or she ignores me completely. Other times I ask her questions and she throws my question back to me in a mocking way.
How do you respond to a school-ager who is like this? How do you get a conversation going with them?

@mediagirl: she may be introverted, so wants some space. But the rudeness sounds a bit much!! What do her parents say when she ignores you or uses the tablet while you're talking to them?

Don't have any advice for you but as a mom if my kid isn't listening I would take away whatever they are doing/looking at until they respond. This is something I am working on daily with DS! Seriously though I always feel like its just my kid! Happy to hear other 7yr olds are they same way

Our God daughter is like this- very self involved and doesn't have time for chatting. Her parents will make he at least exchange pleasentries, but other than that they aren't prying any devices out of her hand. I was able to get her chatting about her interests when I noticed she moved on to a different play thing that was not an electronic. For me it was timing.

@mrbee: she usually tries to get her to say something or she will respond to my question to her daughter. Typically she makes an excuse like the other night I asked her if she was reading any good books right now and her mom told me that she is tracked out so she isn't reading anything right now...

I typically don't bother. I was like this as a child, except I had my nose in a book, not a tablet.
I find that it is easier to engage kids in an activity if you want to get them away from their tablet, but I don't worry if it's not my son. We don't let him have his tablet when we go to a friends house, for example, but we do let him pack a bag of some stuff of his so he has something that is "his."
