I believe that the parents should always have eyes on the kids as you're walking through a city... and if it's crowded, then it's best to hold hands with the kids (if they will let you). My kids are 4 and 6, so still young enough that I worry about their safety.
I see lots of parents employ the duckling method though, where they walk in front and the kids follow behind them.
Am I being too paranoid?

I always hold their hands. Mine are 3 and 5 and I don't feel comfortable walking in front of them.

We live in the city, though not a very crowded part of it. My 2.5 yo can walk next to or in front of me on the sidewalks but doesn't have to hold my hand, but does absolutely have to stop and hold hands crossing the street. I wouldn't trust her to follow behind me, though occasionally when she is being to slow I walk ahead of her to get her to hurry up.
In a crowd she is overwhelmed too so she will hold my hand.

I still wear LO at 4 and carry her a lot, which I know isn't the norm. I require handholding at street crossings and in crowds. I also sometimes in crowded areas will just hold onto the back of her shirt with a finger - enough to direct her and know exactly where she is, without being total helicopter

We hold hands (5 and 2.5). I can trust the older one well enough, but not the younger one. If it's really crowded, we definitely hold hands.

We live in the city near a highly trafficked and busy corner. I require that she hold my hand if she is not on her scooter or in the stroller. Sometimes she does not hold my hand, but I make sure she is ahead of me. I need to se her at all times.

My youngest two are in the stroller or carrier.
My oldest walks along side me and is good at keeping up. She has to be with two little ones around. In crowds and crosswalks she holds my hand. Other times too but only for closeness.
She's come a long way from the runner she was at two.

I hold my DD's hand at all times. Some little girl just got ran over by a car in the Bronx because she was following her mom across the street. So sad.

We talk about sidewalk and parking lot rules as we're going somewhere. Today at Target, when we got out to the parking lot, I told him to stay close and hold my hand, no darting around the car too.
