I say "fo-yay"...But I've heard people say "fo-yer".
How do you say it?

Ha interesting - when I read the title I thought "there's more than one way to say 'foy-er'? I've never said it 'foy-ay'

haha, you should make a poll!
I say foy-yay, but we're French. I know others that say foy-yer.

@Adira: that's why I pronounce it *yay,* because the word is French. For the same reason I would pronounce the last name Pelletier as Pell-tea-ay and not Pell-eh-tear.

being from Boston, I think I say foy-yer, but it comes out foy-yay because of the "r" on the end...much easier for me to say hall

Foyer.
Foy-yay sounds fancy, like when people (my husband for one) say aunt (rhymes with font) instead of aunt (rhymes with ant).

Foy-yer. Around here that's what everyone calls it.

@mediagirl: I agree with you on the aunt front!!! My family always pronounces it like "ant" and my stupid friends are always trying to correct me! I'm like "It can be pronounced either way!!!!" "Aunt" (rhyming with font) just sounds so snooty to me!

@mediagirl: I remember when I first went to college and referred to my aunt (font) and and a friend accused me of being a fancy talker- he was from the 'ant' camp.

Foy-er.
@mediagirl: I say aunt rhyming with font, I never thought of it as fancy =D

@Pipers Mommy: Ha I'm from Boston too and was thinking the same thing - "Foy-yah"

Foy-yer....although since I'm from Wisconsin, everyone says that I pronouce a lot of things differently

I say both depending on who I'm talking to. My family says foy-yer, so if I'm talking to them, that's how I pronounce it. Around everyone else, I say foy-yay.

I've heard both but when I own a house, I'll say 'foy-yer.'

I say foy-yay, but I'm from England and I have never heard it said any other way.

lol I like this topic because I've always said foy-er (that's how DH says it too), but not long ago I heard someone pronounce it foy-yay on TV and I felt so stupid because I thought I must have been saying it wrong this whole time.
Glad to see I'm not the ONLY one who says foy-er! Maybe it's a regional thing?

@Mrs. Yoyo: I only say foy-yay in the same ironic manner that we sometimes say Tar-jay. It's foy-er.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
so weird!! I had NO IDEA people say it differently! It's a French word, so I pronounce it foy yay - that's how it should be!!
@Adira: @mediagirl: I say aunt as in font. It's partly a midwest thing, because when I moved to the East Coast everyone there said "ant". When you say "auntie" do you say "anty"?? I always call my aunts "auntie", I think "anty" sounds weird lol
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@Coco Bee: I say "ant" for aunt. To answer your question, I don't know anybody who says "auntie" OR "anty"! It's just aunt. (Ant.)
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Coco Bee: haha. I just go with whatever my family calls people. I have never once in my life called one of my aunts auntie!
Now that I'm thinking about it...my friends call me auntie Jill to their kids and they say "ant"ie! Haha. I think it is definitely a regional thing.

@mediagirl: I think a lot of pronunciation is - my husband and I are always arguing about the "correct" ways to say things! I know sometimes I'm wrong but it's fun lol and he's the odd one out since he moved to my homestate
Although, I DO think that aunt is supposed to be pronounced rhyming with font, think of the word "jaunt", we don't say "jant" lol

I say Foy-yay.
People laugh at me cause most people around here say Foy-yer. Isn't Foy-yay the "correct" way?
