About a month ago I got a birth announcement for an Emilia. I thought I knew how to say it but I ran into a mutual friend recently and she was saying the name differently. All communication has been through text/email so we don't know how the parents are saying it. Of course whatever they say goes but out of curiosity...
How do you say the name Emilia?

I agree with @Tidybee. It's like Emily with an "ia" ending instead of "y".

Wow, I wouldn't have pronounced it like that. I'd pronounce it like Amelia:

I would say Em-eel-ya, but I can see how some might think Em-el-ee-ya.

Interesting. Until my friend mentioned something yesterday I was only wondering about the first syllable and whether is was a hard 'E' or an 'eh'. I'm not good at writing things out phonetically but I've been saying eh-mee-lee-uh like Emilio (eh-mee-lee-o) Esteves but with an 'a.'
My friend is saying eh-meh-lee-uh like the name Emily plus an "uh". I never considered that option before.

Amelia is a derivative of Amy, Emilia is a derivative of Emily. We're considering Emelia (more of the italian spelling) for a name
