I just say thank you for your generous gift. If I know what I'm going to buy with it I'll include that too!

"Thanks for the money" does sound strange to me, too.

I always say thank you for the "generous gift" and say it will come in handy for buying xyz...

I say "the generous gift" or the "gift if money"...and then say what we will use it for.
