If I cleaned up the edges around the bottom, how does this look? Also, I was rushed a bit because I had to do this while LO ate a snack so I could probably go slower when I have to do this again on Friday. But be honest, what do you think?

I like it! I definitely think the bottom needs to be cleaned up a bit (as you said) but I think its colorful and pretty

I'd probably clean up the random little points on the cake too. Also, this would be LO's smash cake.

The top looks the messiest to me. If you can do it cleaner as well, I think it would be great for a cake smash.

I agree, I would think of something to do on the top that isn't so messy.

The top definitely felt rushed. She was getting tired of sitting there so I was trying to hurry and finish.
Thanks everyone for your input. I'll probably make another and try to decorate it again Wednesday or Thursday!

For a kids party, I think this is nice.. if it was for an adult I would say it needed to be cleaner, but for a child I like it

I think the icing looks like it was a little too runny. For the technique it looks like you're going for, you need a nice medium-consistency buttercream. Other than that, it will be fine once you have time to go slowly.

I was going to say what @zippylef said - it looks like you need a thicker consistency on the icing. But I love the colors and the design you are going for. Fun!

@BelugaBean: Yes, probably! I did a similar technique to that on a friend's smash cake and I used the Wilton recipe. It turned out really nice!
Is that colored store-bought icing?

I really like the idea you are going for. I agree that a thicker icing will probably do what you are wanting.
Way better than anything I could ever do

@zippylef: It is. We only had time to go by one store yesterday because I forgot I had wanted to try this again yesterday. I do know I can get some Wilton's decorator icing soon though so I can try it with that. I already have the food coloring to use for that too. I could tell that this was thinner than the decorator icing so hopefully that'll make a big difference.

@BelugaBean: It will make a HUGE difference! I tried decorating (like, more than just icing) with the store bought stuff one time and never again. It was a disaster.
You can make the Wilton stuff, it's really easy. http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Buttercream-Icing
Small tip though: I use salted butter and vanilla AND almond extract in mine for taste.
