I'll be 31 weeks on Thurs and we don't have any top contenders for a name. I guess we were about the same with LO1, nothing really seemed right then at 32 or 33 weeks we found a name we really liked. Starting to get worried though that we'll have a nameless baby.
How far along were you? Also if anyone has a girls name that won't be butchered by either english or french speakers, isn't in the top 20, and doesn't end with -ette I'm all ears (well it's the internet so I guess eyes).

We picked out names for both LO's pretty early. Actually with LO we had a name picked out but then miscarried, and then decided to keep the names that we had planned for the next LO. This time we waited until 12 weeks and picked the names (boy and girl because we're team green).

Oooh, good thread. We JUST started hashing out name ideas...we've been putting it off (I'll be 30 weeks on Friday). Our plan is to get 3 or 4 that we really like, then when baby girl is born, hopefully one will just..."work!"

DH came up with R's name around 38 weeks? And we finalized it when she was born.

We didn't settle on names until after he was born. We went in with a short list for boy/girl (we were team green). Admittedly we only had one name on the boy list but we had a lot of trouble with boy names so it was really the only one that would work, but we went in with 3 different middle names for it. We went in with 3 or 4 girl names on a list that had been added to and trimmed since the start of the second trimester (DH refused to discuss names before then).

We didn't even think about girls names until we found out LO was a girl! So we hashed things back and forth and had a small list not too long after that. I think around 30 weeks we had decided... though I was still waffling inside for a while longer, I just didn't tell DH because he loved the name so much. In the end it was perfect for her.
ETA: My LO's name is Ellora, would that sound nice in French?

We had a list of names that we took to the hospital with us, LO was un named for a day and referred to as Baby Boy XXX on the hospital website!
eta: on the French side of things, I have a French friend who named her daughter Sarah (had to sound good in French, German and English).

We knew her name when we found out she was a girl. It took a little longer to settle on the middle name.

I think we probably decided around 15ish weeks? We had a girl name all picked out and then we found out at 11 weeks through the MT21 test that we were having a boy.
I had been hoping to not have to deal with the boy name issue since DH hated almost everything I suggested to him and couldn't come up with his own ideas. But once we knew it was a boy and that we'd have to find a name, it made me really anxious to have it hanging out there, not done.

What about a simple name like Sarah? Alice? Anna? Mary? I can't imagine how a French speaking person would butcher any of those names, and they're all so pretty and elegant. Simple probably is the way to go if you're concerned about pronounciation.
My baby didnt have a name until 2 hours after he was born. We wanted to see him first.

I'm 37wks on Thursday and we haven't picked a name for our little girl yet. We are unlikely to decide until after she arrives. Rose/Rosalie is our top pick at the moment, but we are still a little unsure.

@cheesetomywhine: Thanks, we've been talking about some of those, I like Cora but my husband hates it. He really likes Lucy but I'm not sure if it's too cutesy. We're an indecisive bunch on names.
@lindseykaye: Ellora is beautiful, my LO1 has the first two letters in her name so we probably will avoid any more El names, some of the names we like start with E but I'm not sure if that's too much having kids with all the same letter first name or I'm just making up random rules then.

@Pink Champagne: I like simple names but there's a lot of those in my family. A lot of the names you listed are either already an immediate family members first name (and I'm afraid of naming after someone and insulting others) or are very similar to LO1 first and middle name.

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and baby boy still doesn't have a name. I'm not too worried about it. I am hoping we will be inspired when we see his face.

We took two names for each gender into the delivery room. We settled on the girl names early on (about halfway) but didn't have boy finalists until I freaked out about it at 38.5 weeks. I'm glad we had a girl, because I still don't know that our boy options were "right". I was going to suggest Lucy/Lucie for a French and American name, so I'm on Team DH 
We grounded it with a more serious middle name, and there are some serious namesakes too (suffragette Lucy Stone and Bronte's heroine from Vilette, Lucy Snowe) if the Beatles and Narnia don't do it for you.
Eta: other names that would work in French from my list were Clara, Vivian/Vivienne and Delphine

I think I was 36 weeks when we picked a name. I'm surprised we even settled on one then. I thought for sure our baby was going to be born nameless.

@Maysprout: I wouldn't use an "El-" name for another child either! I probably won't use another name that starts with "E" or ends with an "a"! I'm weird like that, too. It's all personal preference. I have seen it spelled Allora if that makes a difference
Another name we won't use that I was in love with is Mara.

We had her first name picked out when I got pregnant the first time....so, at least 18 months before her birth. We had always liked it. We didn't give her a middle name until we were discharged, though! We waffled on that quite a bit! Stressful! And it was just a middle name! Eep.

For DS, I had his name picked out years in advance, and it just so happened that our first child was a boy.
I'm in the same boat as you for baby 2! I am 23 weeks and we are expecting a girl and it MUST work in French and English. We have 3 contenders so far, but still have time to think about it. Have you looked at any French baby name sites? All the ones I have looked at so far have not been very useful.
It's tricky though with avoiding the top 10 or 20. DS's name is in the top 5 in France, but the last time it hit the top 10 in the US was circa 1910!

@lamariniere: LO1 name is fairly popular in France, it's in the top 10 in nearby countries but it's around maybe 350s in the US. We have gotten some French baby name books out and looked on the web but we just haven't found something yet. Some of the names I like are like 2nd cousins names or uncle's ex wives names (on DH side). MIL was a little surprised when we chose LO1s name because it's like a 3rd cousins name (who was just a few months older than LO), but come on, I don't think DH had even ever met the couple so I dug my heels in at that point and she really likes the name too so I'm glad I stuck to my guns.

We had a girls name picked out (well, down to the final 2) by ~12 weeks. We took the Maternit21 test at 12 weeks and got the results back at 13 weeks, so we had our boy name a week later!
So official final name at 14 weeks. Announced it to everyone else at 20 (and the internets at 21)
