I'd say yes, but I wonder how adding an attached garage will change the look of the farm house and how many windows you'll lose adding that big of an addition.
We don't have an attached garage, in fact very very few do here despite the cold and snow. We're not car people so it doesn't bother me at all.

I grew up in a winter climate and I still prefer detached, although it's a non issue for me because we rent. I'm just not a fan of the way attached garages look. Also, it seems like the garage entrance always becomes the regular day to day entrance and I kind of hate traipsing through friends' and family's garages to get to their houses. So I definitely wouldn't spend the money. To each her own though.

I live in CA where weather isn't a concern, but we had a detached garage the first 5 months with twins and have had attached ever since. I always take several trips to get everything & everyone out to the car and I feel absolutely fine leaving the twins in the care while I run back inside to get stuff. I did not feel that way with a detached garage. Also for the first year and a half or so, if they fell asleep in the car I'd leave them out there until they woke up--never wake two sleeping babies!

For us it's pretty important since we live in the Northeast so it helps to not have to shovel out two cars!

We live in the Northeast and have a detached garage...it hasn't been an issue for us. That being said, we do park in the garage and have a remote car starter for our primary car, which makes a huge difference, especially when you have two little kids to bundle up, etc.

For sure we like attached - if only for the mere fact of bringing in groceries. Of course the weather piece is a bonus and I assume with kids, that's going to add to the number of trips back and forth to get out the door!
