I'm in love with an older home with a detached garage...wondering if I will miss an attached garage!

We live in an older home too, and ours is attached (built on, and terribly so). But we've never used it for cars! It's been full of junk since we moved in. My dream is that it gets cleaned out this fall and I can park in it and at least not have to brush snow off my car all winter.
Did you move?

Ours is detached. It's shared with the 5 other units. Then you walk up 4 flights of stairs to get into our apartment. Bringing groceries in is awesome

Ours is detached but steps away! It's less convenient than attached, but it also keeps mice out of the house (since they could easily hide in the garage in the winter)

@JennyD: No, we are house hunting and thinking about putting an offer in soon!

@autumnlove: How exciting! Sort of. I swore to my husband when we bought our place I was never moving again! And I meant it. Moving freaks me out. But it's exciting for other people.

Attached. But I wouldn't mind if it was detached since that would make it harder for DH to track in dirt when working out there

Ours is attached which is convenient but not a necessity unless you live somewhere that will be cold and snowy a lot of the time. Obviously it will be a pain for things like bringing home groceries when it's pouring rain, but I don't think that should be a deal breaker if you love the home!

Ours is attached. For the past while we haven't been using it though (its been a mess after some renos) and I reaaally miss it. We're making cleaning it a priority next weekend so we can make sure we have it back before the cold rainy fall days and winter.

@MamaMoose: Agreed. If I fell in love with a house with a detached I'd suck it up

Attached was a must for us. Its easier with the dog who likes to escape, this way we pull in and shut the garage door then I can just open the door to the house and let the dog run out while I unload everything in the car. Plus, its raining we didn't want to have to drag everything through the pouring rain to the car. We have thunderstorms every day in the summer here.

We don't have a garage, but we have a carport and it's attached to the house. It leads into the guestroom area outside of the laundry room, so it's very garage-like, just without the walls. I don't know if I'd ever want to cover it up because it would block the window to the nursery.

Ours is detached. Have to walk about 40 feet outside.... But having lived in the house for over 3 years, I can't say I mind it even though we live in a climate with really harsh winters and lots of wind. I'd say it's fine!!

Attached and I love not having to walk outside in the rain or have to make sure the walk way is properly shoveled, but if I loved a house that had a detached, I'd probably suck it up.

Attached. I don't think detached is popular around here ... I haven't seen one.

Detatched. House was built in 1904, while the garage was built in 1915. I really like having a detached garage, but we have a basement as well.

Ours is detached. We don't use the garage much though, we just park on the driveway.

Detached. I wouldn't say it's super common around here, but I love the uniqueness it brings to our home. Plus, when DH is doing work out there, I don't hear it as much!

Attached, I couldn't do it any other way! I had detached growing up and hated it.

Ours is attached with a door to the inside of the house, so it's easy for throwing garbage/recycling right into the bins.
My moms is attached but you can only get to it from outside, so I don't see it as that different from detached.. unless it is super far from the house!

Attached and I love it. Never had a garage growing up so I didn't get the big deal. Now that I have it, I'll never go back. No running in and out in the rain, close the garage door before letting the dogs out so no worries about them running off. Doesn't get super hot in the summer, and no snow issues in the winter.

We have a double attached garage and a single detached. We live on a corner lot, so we have one driveway on each street.

Ours is attached, completely. It's part of the house instead of being beside the house. Pretty much all of the houses down here are being built this way now to save on land space. I miss having an attached garage that is next to the house so you can have your mudroom right there in between the two.

Ours is detached with a covered walkway leading to our back door. I don't like the look of attached garages.

attached and it's soooooo convenient! it's definitely on my must have list for house buying!

We live in an apartment complex where the garages are attached to the whole building. It's not technically attached to my apartment. I have to go downstairs (our apt entrance is on the 2nd floor) and past 3 other garages before I get to my own.
Can't wait to buy a home with garage! I would prefer an attached garage during the rainy and snowy days. But I'll take a detached garage just for the extra storage space.
