I'm due in 4 days. Right now, We own 2pairs of baby socks. Are they a neccesary newborn item? Current temps in our area are 40-50 at night and low 70s during the day.

They are nice, but my 6 week old won't keep them on.
So the socks are impotent in our house

Probably not very important, and yet somehow I have 33 pairs...how did this happen?!

lol! yes indeed I got confused when i saw "impotent"
Anyway if the temps are that low then yes I would get more socks. We didnt use them much in the beginning because we had warmer temps for the most part, but now that the weather is getting colder she wears socks everyday.

@MamaMoose: haha yes! I'm on DH's stupid iPad. I'm horrible at typing on this thing!

Yeah, with the weather that low and getting colder, you'll want socks. You'll probably have some footie outfits, but if those were the temperatures in my area, LO- even at at 18 months- would still be wearing socks most of the time.

Use footie pajamas for his/her first 6-8 weeks of life and you won't need them. I couldn't keep socks on her feet until she was 8-10 weeks.

hahaha sorry i missed out on the impotent. ipad spelling sucks!
i personally think they are pretty important. we used socks as mittens so they don't scratch themselves as newborns). they just stuck on better although we did use mittens too. also, not sure if it's their circulation, but their feet were always cold. at 5 months, they still wear socks. i probably have like 18 pairs. (6 of them are too small now). actually the other 12 are getting small i really need to get bigger ones. maybe it's cuz they're used to it, but they keep them on. although my girl is really playing with her feet now and i can see her tugging on her socks.

My LO lived in sleepers so her foot stayed nice and toasty.
Not important but mittens are important!

I think they're important in cooler weather but when my LO was itty bitty he wore his sleepers (footed pajamas) all day.

I dressed mine in pants a lot (boy) and so we needed socks. His outfits were too cute not to use, so I kept the footed pjs for nightime. It was cool here, so the outfits needed socks. I learned that there were some socks that stayed on and some that did not. And we'd just use the ones that stayed on. (Sometimes I did the geeky socks-on-outside-of-pants thing).
And we didn't do mittens. At the hospital we asked about cutting the nails or putting on mittens and they said that baby will learn quickly not to scratch his face, and it was true.

E has always had socks or footed PJs on. I found the carter socks sucked and would always fall off, but the circo socks we got at target stay on his feet really well. Babies have bad circulation and his tootsies are always cold.

For the first few weeks, we always put socks on (and she was born in May) and didn't have any issues with the newborn size socks staying on. Mittens are also a must - those little finger nails make Edward Scissorhands look like he has a lovely manicure!

We always put on footed PJs so had no need for socks even though LO was born in the end of Feb. We had like 3 pairs for when we took her out in "regular" clothes, not PJs, and that was more than enough for the first couple months.

We have footed pjs too but they get so short so quickly. Nicer to wear pants and socks. My kids grew really quickly...

I put C in tights a lot of the time. Socks fall off too much for me.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: LOL!
We used them as mittens at the hospital!
And we used them as socks fairly often. We keep a pair in the diaper bag for cold stores and museum but he does not wear them all day.

My daughter was born in the winter, so she constantly had socks on even under footed pjs.
