I'm still rocking M to sleep for naps. She will be 10 months this month. I love it and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

I rocked DD to sleep until she was 18 months. I still rock DS for naps ( not at bedtime, though) but he' s only 12 months. I figure he'll let me know when he's ready to stop.

We stopped at around 5 months when we transitioned out of the swaddle...at that point, he would wake up when we put him down because his arms would flail. So now he puts himself to sleep. I do miss the baby snuggles sometimes!

We used to have to bounce E like crazy on an exercise ball to get him to nap but last month (at 5 months) we night sleep trained and at the same time transitioned to just rocking as part of our nap time routine. It takes him less than 3 minutes to fall asleep while rocking, he stays asleep when I put him down and I love the snuggles

@mediagirl: i was curious, how long does it take to rock your LO to sleep?
i ask because we didn't rock our LO to sleep, and i wonder how much of that was because he didn't tend to fall asleep in our arms. waiting for him to fall asleep was like watching grass grow during the winter, so it never really became an option for us. if he had fallen asleep in a shorter amount of time while in our arms, i can imagine we would have rocked him more.

A loooong time. I think Owen was almost two years old by the time we stopped rocking him to sleep. It sounds ridiculous, but it was also really nice to just cuddle in the chair, read stories, and then rock back and forth until he was asleep. We mainly stopped because he just got really big and would wake up during the shift to his bed.

Ugh. We still do this too at 1 year. DD is very tough to get down on naps, so rocking is usually the only option. Although lately she really fights the rocking too. Sometimes she will just scream, like I'm trying to murder her. All I'm trying to do is rock my poor sleepy baby to sleep. We've been experimenting a little with not rocking for naps, with limited success.

@edelweiss: she goes to sleep on her own for bedtime now. I only rock for naps and it normally takes less than a minute. If I follow her signs (ear rubbing, eye rubbing or yawning) she goes down quickly.
@Mrs. Chalk: I don't want her to ever get too big for rocking.
@Honeybee: exactly. She will decide when she's ready to fall asleep for naps on her own. I don't want her to ever stop wanting to be rocked.

She wasnt into rocking once she got out of her newborn phase. My mom tried so hard to rock her to sleep even though I told her all the time it wouldn't work, she wants to be put down. And it never worked.

@artbee: My MIL is the same way with the pacifier. We keep telling her that Baby Lantern doesn't take it anymore, but she keeps putting it in her mouth every time, which upsets her even more. Silly grandparents. They stick to what worked for their kids.

We never really rocked, but we did nurse to sleep. We did that for nearly 2 years and then LO wanted to have his back rubbed as he fell asleep, so we do that now (2.5 years).

@Mrs. Lantern: no wonder I was such a chubby baby then. My mom's answer to every cry was "she's hungry. " she bought our formula for us so I always said you can try feeding her, its your money you're wasting. And lo always spit the bottle out!
