How long is a convertible car seat used? What is the next step after that? A booster seat?

I think they last a while, but depends on the seat. Our britx pavilion is good up to 48 inches or 70 lbs, whichever comes first. I think the recs are something until 57 inches tall or so , so we would geta booster for that last bit.

Yea, we switched them over to booster seats after the convertible seats.

I would say most people use them from the time baby is 9mo//1yr until the child is 4/5 years and the they switch to a booster. Depending on the size of the child they could be in the convertible even longer. Most places either have a law or at least the recommendation that kids must be 8 years old AND 80 lbs AND 4'8" before they can sit in a standard seatbelt alone.

I agree with pp that a booster comes next - I think until a regular seat belt fits properly and the shoulder belt is at the right position. We just got the Diono Radian RXT which is a convertible that converts to a booster.

@Cole: Yep, our eldest is 8 and he doesn't meet the weight requirements yet, so he's still in a booster seat until he puts some lbs on!
I also think we switched them over to booster seats at about 4, although I'm not sure what they weighed at the time we switched.

@.twist.: Some of the little ones I watch are going to be in booster seats until they go through puberty at the rate they are going! It is remarkable how different the requirements are from when we were little-- I remember my mom getting flack for having me in a booster when I was 6, people thought she was babying me!

@Cole: I know!! I do not remember being in a booster seat at all, especially not when I started schooling! By grade one I was definitely out of any car seats! It really is crazy and I could totally see our eldest being in a booster till grade 6! haha. poor kid.

My 4 yr old is in combination boosters since she turned 4. They are boosters with a 5 point harness since I feel more comfortable having her in that that using the seat belt. When she outgrows the harness we will switch to seat belt setting . We use britax frontier 45. She is still comfortably in range for her convertible car seat but I had to hand those down to DS so opted for this choice.
