My dad paid my car insurance through college and gave me extra cash when I would see him, but otherwise I have paid all my own expenses since 18.

Since I graduated from college so 6 years?

I lived at home (other than during college) 'til I got married, so I guess only 3 and a half years. That sounds bad! LOL I always worked after college though.

Since a few months after I graduated college-- I lived at home for the summer while I found a job. They paid for college and basic living expenses and I worked summers for fun money. They also made the offer that if I really, really needed help with rent right after I moved out they would help, but I never needed it.

That said... I'm still on their cell phone family plan and never remember to send them the check for my teeny portion

Ever sense hs graduation. mom helped me out every once in a while but it was usually a loan. Times have change and mom has been borrowing money from me. She bought a house and forgot that she had to finish paying in on last years taxes. It feels to be able to give back.

I am a bit hard headed and wanted to do everything on my own.. move to the big city and survive and pay for university myself. I always felt my parents should spend their money on themselves and there was no reason to give me handouts if I could support myself. I worked as a bartender throughout my 7 years of post secondary and never needed student loans or help from my parents. It taught me a lot of independence and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I knew if I needed help they would be there for me but I wanted to try and do it by myself and I did. I finished school in a great financial position because of this.

A few months? I still had their car until I bought one last year. Other than that, since my internship junior year in college when I started making some real money.

In college I paid my own rent, utilities, had student loans for books, and had to pay for gas, fun money, ect. However my parents paid for my car, my mom would buy me groceries and take me clothes shopping every once in awhile. So, whereas I thought I was independent I really did depend on them a lot! they would both sneak me money too when I was home, or my dad would surprise me and go fill up my car with gas.

I officially became independent when I graduated and got my fulltime job at 21.

I moved back in with them after undergrad at the age of 21 when I went to grad school at a campus close to their house. I graduated with my masters at 22 and lived with them until I was 23 when I got married. I am now almost 25.

So the answer to the question is about 1 1/2 years.

I do still rely on my dads insurance since I won't be kicked off for another year - but it is no additional cost to him and I pay everything I owe on my end.

My parents got me through university debt free (so amazing I realize now!!) but since graduation I have been independent. So maybe 5 years?

3 and 1/2 years

Since I graduated from high school. (About 10 years). I took out loans for room, board and tuition at college, then lived in apartments paid for by my various jobs until I met DH and we moved in together.

As soon as I graduated college, so almost nine years.

I paid for everything after the first semester of college, soooo 12 years now.

They didn't pay for my college, but I did live at home my first semester. So since I was 19.

In my early 20's I think. I moved out when I was 21, but my dad still paid my car insurance (it was all in his name at that point). I don't think I actually took over the insurance until I turned 23.
