And if you're a WOHM, how much time do you have left to spend with your baby once you're home for the day? I'm wondering this because I work pretty far from home (I live on the Jersey shore, I work near Wall Street - about 1 h 40m to 2h each way) and I'm wondering what it would be like when I do have a baby. Right now, I work 9:30am to 5:30pm but I'm out of the house from 6:40am to 7:15pm on the days I don't work out, and I don't get home till around 8:45pm on the days I go straight to the gym after work. Aren't babies usually sleeping by then?? Will I ever see my baby????

Right now my commute is about half an hour. I’m away from home 7:30am-5pm. I used to commute an hour and 15 minutes though and that was really rough. I’m planning on being a SAHM once our son is born so it won’t affect me but I can definitely understand why you’d be concerned about what impact it may have

Wow I couldnt imagine having that long of a commute! Mine right now is about 15-20 minutes, although it's all country roads the whole way going 50 mph. I can't complain

My commute is an hour each way without traffic. My afternoon commute can take up to 2-3.5 hours in traffic.

My commute is 45 minutes (about 50 miles), BUT I only work 7:30-3:00, so its not too bad. This fall, we will be moving to the town I work in and I absolutely cannot wait.

I commute 2 hours each way, each day. We are out of the house by 6:30 and home by 6:30, LO (now 10 months) is starting to stretch her bed time to 7:30, 8 PM but in there were times when we would literally see her awake for 15-20 minutes all day. I would love when she would wake up early because it meant spending more time with her. It was very disheartening in the beginning but we know that by working we are going to be able to provide her with everything she needs.

My commute is 10-15 minutes, so it is not bad at all. My LO will go to daycare close to my work, so she will ride with me to and from.
@chibee: What are your daycare plans? Are you going to do a center close to your work so if he/she needs to be picked up she can or a nanny? I would think that would be the most challenging aspect. If you need to get your child to the doctor, which I'm guessing will be by your home, how do they get there?

My commute is about 25 minutes. I'm away from home from 7:30am to 5pm every day and our day care is right on my way to work. Drop off/pick up will only add about 5 minutes. When baby gets here I'm thinking of bumping my schedule up half an hour so we would leave the house at 7 and then I would pick him/her up at 4:15 and we would be home at 4:30. I'd rather have extra time in the afternoon with the munchkin.

My commute is about 15-20 minutes on foot. There is a day care in the next building over that we plan on using after my mat leave, but that's so far away who knows what will happen.

When I was working (currently I'm a SAHM), my commute was roughly 40 min - 1 hour each way. Could be more during crazy accident traffic or bad weather. (It took me 4 hours to get home one day bc of some major snowfall, but i digress). I'd leave the house around 7:15 and get to work at 8:10 - 8:30am ish. I'd leave work at 5pm, get home at 6pm.
I'd say once you have the baby, you'd want to work out some arrangement with your employer. Perhaps they may let you come in earlier and leave earlier, or come in the same time but leave early and work remotely from home for a few hours. I know my boss wouldn't have been ecstatic to change my hours but would have agreed just due to the necessity of it.

@MrsBrewer: It's only awesome in the summer! During Canadian winters it can be miserable. At least it saves me a little time in the gym.

No kid yet, but my commute is 10 minutes. I really like it because if I do decide to be a WOHM I won't have far to go. My husband's commute is 40 minutes.

@MrsBrewer: Nope! On the really miserable days I take the subway. It's only one stop and I feel like a lazy loser when I take it, but it's better than slipping on ice.

@Jessie fortunately my husband works oh about 5 minutes from where we live. So if we decide to do the daycare route, he will be able to do the drop off/pickup. I am hoping I could change my hours - I get to work an hour earlier than I need to as it is, becuase of the bus schedule and all, so I'm hoping they will let me leave an hour early once that time comes. I am super jealous of everyone that works so close to home!

My commute was about 15 minutes in good traffic, but up to an hour in bad traffic. It was so stressful to get to our DD in time after work!

If I take public transit (which I normally do), its about 40 minutes. If I drive, it's about 1.5 hours or more.

My commute is an hour each way. Once I return to work I think I'm going to shift my work day a bit, so I can spend some time w/ the baby during either the morning or the evening when she's awake. I'm still deciding which would be better -- morning or evening.

Mine is 15-20 minutes door to door and husband's is even shorter. We work a few blocks from each other. Short commutes are something we truly value so we have sacrificed a lot of space for it!

I don't work, but DH leaves before my LO wakes up and comes home at 4:30. LO's bath time is at 8, so he has lots of time to spend with her. I love it!
Maybe you can try to incorporate your LO into your workouts and get a jogging stroller, or do some at home workouts, maybe use a dvd, after your LO goes to bed or wake up early to do it.

5-7 minutes by car. I could walk, but I'd rather go on walks with the girls!

I actually switched jobs to work closer to home after the baby. The new office was only 10 minutes from my house. I also used to travel alot and my new position had zero travel. It wasn't that great of a career move but I had to put my baby and family first and traveling weeks at a time just wasn't gonna cut it for me.

By car, about an hour. By bus, about 90 minutes.

@chibee: I feel your pain. I used to have an hour and a half commute one way when I worked in DC. Honestly, I wanted a better life than that for my husband and me so I found a new job. I know it's not an option for everyone but I'm much happier with my 30 minute commute now.

My current commute is about 45 minutes - 1 hour. I hate it! I'm hoping to chop it down when we move.

It's only ~15-20 minutes. I'm lucky because I drive opposite rush hour traffic. I can't imagine those hour+ commutes.
