My so and I are planning on buying a new car this weeked but our baby sitter has the flu so we need to take the baby with us. How long does it take to buy a car? we are pretty set on what we want and got preapproved for financing. Should I plan on trying to get her to nap on the go?

Gosh, it's been a while, but I feel like it's always forever---hours.

It took us FOR.EV.ER. and we were paying in cash. I want to say the process took about three hours because of all the paperwork we needed to sign, setting up the insurance, getting the temporary tags put on, etc. Other parts took longer, like registering the vehicle because we bought ours on Friday and the registration office wasn't open that day.

The dealership I have bought from (bought 3 cars there over past 7 years) has door to door delivery service. Arrange everything over the phone or online, and they will deliver the car to you, anywhere in the country. They also advertise that if you come in, you can be finished and out the door within an hour. So, it might be worth asking if your dealership will do something like this.
I bought a used car from them a few weeks ago for my parents, and went on my lunch break and was definitely out of there within an hour, including the test drive and some price negotiations. I was upfront that I didn't have time to dick around, so they could accept my offer or not. haha, they did!

We bought new cars 2 and 3 years ago. Since you know what you want, is it necessary for you to go? DH bought his without me. Mine didn't take long because it had been prearranged over email. I told them what I wanted, knew someone in the business (so i was paying a "friends and family price"), they built the car, and all I had to do was come in, sign some shit, and hand over the money

Forever. We had the car picked out, but did one last test drive to make sure it fit in our garage. It took at least half a day. I was surprised at how long it took.

DH and I went at probably 6 or 7 p.m. to buy mine and we didn't get out until 10. The worst part of it is haggling the price and not being able to talk directly to that magical person behind the door who says yes or no to your offer.
It ended up being so late when we finished they couldn't print our temporary plates and the salesman had to drive it to my house the next day.

I would agree with at least 3 hours, maybe more. It's ridiculous.

It literally took us almost all dang day the first time we bought our car. Got to the dealership around 3/4pm and didn't leave till close to midnight I swear. It was miserable.
When we went to go buy my car 2 years ago, it only took us like an hour. It was awesome!!
However, my friends went and bought a car from the same salesman at the same dealership a few weeks later and it took them like half a day also.
I think the longest part is waiting for the financing department to get to you. There's always a wait since they only have a couple financial people.

If you have to negotiate a price, probably 3-4 hours. If you have a price already agreed to before going and just need to do paper work, that only took us about 2 hours.

FOREVER. I wouldn't take my kids if at all possible.

My parents would drag me and my brother with them to the dealership in hopes that having us there would speed up the process.... Really it was just torture for us, because i was definitely middle school-early high school and could have stayed home and babysat my brother.

We were there for 2.5hrs. We had LO with us but she's 18 months so didn't need to nap for that time.

It took us a longer time than we expected when we bought our first car because we were negotiating the price and they had all these people that had to approve it.
When we leased our electric car, it took us something like 45 minutes.

My boyfriend and I just bought a brand new (to us) truck on Saturday. We went to the dealer with the intention of just test driving a few vehicles. Two hours later we were the proud owners of a truck. It look that long because we had to test drive it, look over the number, and get financing. Thankfully the dealer did everything right there on the spot. I think because you already have the financing worked out before hand it will take less than that. Good luck!

Hours for us too. We were buying used and had some negotiations but we were paying cash and then the car had some stuff that needed to be checked out, cleaned, etc. it was forever!

My most recent one I bought last July, only about 2 hours! I recommend finding a well recommended dealership with great customer service. It really makes the process much smoother!

My car- we were there for like 4 hours. But we also didn't think we would be buying a car that day.
DH's truck- he actually went through a broker. It was all taken care of through the phone/email (over 2 or 3 weeks) and when we went to pick it up all we had to do was sign the paper work. We were there for maybe 15 minutes? Best process ever! And DH got exactly what he wanted for the price he wanted.

We brought LO with us to check out the cars and test drive them, but then actually bought it from a dealer who delivered it to our door and drove away our old car that we traded in.
Could you possibly all go to pick it out the car, then you or your so go home with Lo while one goes back to actually purchase it?
Also a couple of the dealers had actual kids areas with tables and chairs and toys and a TV. Brilliant.

It took us 2 hours last month and we had 2 of our LO's with us. Just tell them you don't have time to play around and you'll go else where if it takes too long.

We bought a car in December and we arrived at 130 pm and left with the car at 400 pm. We were not pre approved or anything. It was very easy but I'd say plan on a few hours at least.

Thank you everyone! Ug this seems like it's going to be a long process, I called ahead and let the dealership know we want to be in and out, hopefully that will help. I might see if I can leave and send SO back while I nap lo at home. She's only 5 months and doesn't do well napping out of the house.

I bought a new car about a year ago. It wasn't bad, maybe a couple hours and that was with a lot of negotiating going back and forth.

If you can, negotiate the cost over e-mail ahead of time. That saved me a bunch of time.

We took our young toddler when we bought both of our cars and it took SOOOOOOOO long. She was so, so tired and cranky.

We just bought one in September and I think we were out the door in an hour or two? But we had family/employee pricing so we didn't have to negotiate that otherwise maybe it would've taken longer?

We negotiated everything ahead of time, I just had to pick color so they could have a VIN to start paperwork. I got there around 9 and left around noon.

I negotiated ahead of time via email and specified the exact vin of the car I wanted. It took less than an hour to finish all the paperwork.

Even though we knew what we wanted, it was still like a 3+ hour experience. I actually had to leave early because I had to sing at Church. Luckily, they still let DH drive the car home and bring the last bit of paperwork back for me to sign. Part of the time was also because we were trading in, so we had to get everything squared away with that sale and paying off that loan, etc. Good luck!
