I had a cook balloon, pitocin and then my water broken. Got my epi at 6cm.
I wish I was able to stick it out but in the end I think it helped because I was able to relax for a few hours.

I was 4 centimeters. After my epidural I went from a 4 to a 10 in about 4 hours so for me it certainly didn't slow down my labor and it allowed me to rest since my labor was overnight (9pm-9am). I had always intended to get an epidural so I went ahead as soon as I was in real pain.

I got it at 4 cm - I think I could have held out if it wasn't for my HORRIBLE back labor. I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

with charlie i was 8cm. with olive i was 3cm, but it was painful so much faster since it was my second child!

8cm but asked for it when I was 6cm and it took forever for them to get to me.

I never got it but I asked for it at around 8cm. I started feeling like I wanted to push shortly after I asked for it so I never got it.

Man, i didn't think you could GET an epidural once you were dilated to a 9 or 10! They told my SIL that, anyways.

I asked at 5cm, but didn't get it until 8 cm, the anesthesiologist was missing for about an hour.

I got to the hospital 8 hours after my water broke and at 5cm...3.5 hours later I was almost 6cm. It made me feel defeated so I asked and received it right after. Ah sweet relief!

10Cm with my second and 7 cm with my third (i was 7 when i got there and got my epi right away)
Like pp it didn't have time to work for my third. I delivered before it kicked in, 2 hours after arriving at the hospital.

6-7. But I was already dilated to 4 before I even got to the hospital!

I gave birth to a tiny baby so I really did not need an epidural, I mostly got it because I knew I was going to rip and I didn't want to feel them put in stitches.
@nikol: Same, mine was really for afterwards, the stitches.

5. I couldn't wait any longer, I was shaking so bad from the contractions and I was hoping it would help me get some sleep, which if course didn't happen. But it lasted 12 hours and I felt nothing during labor, it was awesome.

I think I may have been around 4 at the most. I was induced, hoping for as natural of a birth as possible and things were not progressing. My OB/GYN had already broke my waters earlier hoping to speed things up but it didn't work and they needed to get labor moving with pitocin, which he would not do without an epi in place.

5cm, but I'd been awake for nearly 24 hours when I was admitted and was exhausted from the back labor. I'd originally been planning on trying to wait it out as long as possible but when the time came I desperately needed the rest. It stopped working somewhere between 8-9cm, though, and was redone two hours later when I was at 10 so I could relax and labor down for a while before pushing.

My personal goal was 5 cm, but when I walked in triage I was 7 cm. there was no question in my mind when I walked in that hospital that I was asking for an epidural no matter how far along I was -- it HURT! I got the epidural around 2 hours later and had started throwing up and was 8 cm shortly after getting it so I'm assuming I was already 8 when I got it.

I was a 6, I'd entered my 27th(?) hour of contractions and was stalled. They gave me the epidural and started pitocin right after that. It started to work right away.

10. I was at 9 when I got to the hospitals. 10 within a few minutes with a cervical lip. When the doc told me that my cervix would rupture if I kept pushing, I told her she would have to give me the drugs.

maybe 5. when i got to the hospital i was already 4 and got the epi about an hour later. so i'm guessing 5 although the pain felt like 10. oh man, the epi is the best thing ever.

5 cm...I progressed to 10 within an hour and a half after the epi, so it definitely was the right decision--it helped me relax and dilate.

I was at 4. I dilated to a 10 in 2 hours after getting the epidural though, and then only needed to push for a half hour or so. I was so tense without it that I wasn't dilating properly, I'm sure it sped up my labor.

@kiddosc: exactly the same with me! I only had to push for 20 min, and the epi definitely contributed in a positive way, I think.
