I am just starting to cloth diaper my 8 weeks old and have a stash of 18. DS is going to be starting daycare in a month from 8-4:30. I want to wash every other day. Should I get a couple more?

I have around 30...but could get by with less. I think it's absolutely possible to cloth diaper with 18, but it is convenient to have a few more. It's nice to able to get by if you don't get to the laundry.

We have 24 BG 4.0s. In the early days I felt like a few more would have been nice, but we made it work.

@peaches1038: My daughter is 4 and out of diapers but I had just about 20 diapers. It was just barely enough. Put it this way, I made it work. I bought these fancy, beautiful, expensive ones but wouldn't stretch my budget when I found I could use some more.

I have about 20 BG 4.0s and I stack of prefolds I use as back up or when we need diaper cream. I wash twice a week. We have a crazy night time diaper set up and I only have a few of those so that's generally when I wash.

@maddyz: I'm intrigued by your night time set up! Care to share? We have been using disposables so far because he sleeps so well overnight (8 hours straight at 8 weeks) and I'm scared to mess that up.
@808love: how many more would you have wanted? 20 even as your LO got older still was just barely enough? I have a mix of BG 4.0s, and grovia and smart bottoms AIOs

@peaches1038: I think 24 would be great for me. I washed often and line dried. 28 would be luxurious. 32 excessive I think just because we potty trained early. I wish I got all snaps bum genius 4.0 all in one organic (I forgot the actual names). I got a lot of BG Velcro 4.0 pockets that wore out fast. I think. It has been so long. Anyway, I was totally into this artist line they had at the time.

We have 22 BG Freetimes and Rumparooz pockets. We also have a bunch of random others that we tried, and use as backups. I line-dry the all-in-ones and pocket covers, and machine dry the inserts and wet bags. Sometimes the AIOs aren't quite dry in time, so I could use a couple more. I do laundry every 2-3 days.

I have 18. We have use disposables overnight and wash e/o day and it's always been enough for us. We are starting daycare tomorrow though so I'm wondering if I might need a few more if they go through more than I do at home (although I sort of doubt that because I change every 2 hours same as they do).

@peaches1038: question-will LO use cloth diapers at daycare? If not, you might not need more. You can always buy more later. If using at daycare, I would up to 24, yes!!

@808love: yes, he will use them at daycare! I think I'll buy 4 more and see how it goes!

@peaches1038: I'm excited for your cloth diaper adventure! Still don't know too many people who did it IRL, so congratulations on your commitment!

@808love: thanks! It's going surprisingly well so far. do you think it helped your daughter potty train more easily?
pomelo / 5866 posts
@peaches1038: Possibly. Can't say for sure but I would like to think so. I also used cloth wipes and threw them in the wash. I used to buy cute soft ones but later I just cut up her thin baby blankets and sewed the edges for quick and -hehe-dirty wipes.

Our cloth diaper service brings 40/week, which is not enough even though we don't use cloth at night (we're on the wait list for more). Extrapolating from how we go through those, I would want to have probably 25 if we did our own.

We have 28 BG Freetimes. Love them. 18 would not have been enough for us at 8 weeks because we were going through a million diapers a day then, so if 18 is working for you now it'll probably continue to be fine. Now that LO is 9 months old she isn't going through nearly as many diapers.

@GreenThumb: @maddyz: @littlejoy: @808love: did you like the 4.0s throughout the entire time you cloth diapered? They held up well? I have the snaps. Out of the three brands I have, they are the cheapest and I like them so far. I'm wondering if I should just get 6 more of those now, which would make my stash "uneven" haha

@peaches1038: We are still using our 4.0s (all snaps) and LO is 2.5. We did switch to disposables at night at some point because she was a heavy wetter. And we are in the midst of potty training, but use the BGs whenever we need to. I would like to use them for #2 as well, but I am wondering if I need to replace the elastic in the legs before using them for a little baby again.

@peaches1038 we are only about 6 months into using them and I am super happy, they are holding up well. They don't work as overnight diapers for us. I am hoping they are still good for the next kid too if/when that happens. O tried a few other ones but liked the fit on the 4.0s best.

Yes, I liked the 4.0s but we converted Velcro to snaps which never quite fit that great. (Good job getting snaps from the get-go. ) I also bought a bigger size so it hung on LO for awhile. She was petite and we switched to thick cloth panties 1-2 year olds. I always favored my precious 3 AIO BG elementals I purchased after birth (to get up to 20). And yes, baby washcloths are brilliant for wipes as well!

For nighttime, we are using BG Freetimes with a Bummis hemp insert placed on top. I think this was on the advice of @Pawprints. It was seriously game-changing. We have a heavy wetter, and do not need to change him overnight at all. We tried several other cloth and disposable solutions and this was the only one that worked for us. DS never gets a rash, and we don't need to wake him up at night to change him and/or his sheets.
@Peaches1038: Maybe you'd consider trying the Freetimes, since you are planning to buy more anyway? I have some 4.0s as well, but they aren't my mainstay.

@peaches1038: We're at 16 months (cloth diapering since 2 months) and still love our 4.0s the best! We have some BG Freetimes which don't fit quite as well (skinny baby) and a few Rumparooz pockets that I like but hubby finds harder to use (they are stretchier and he is lazy when he puts on diapers). We have found that 24 diapers is great, but we did start out with less (16-18 I think?). It's do-able.

@peaches1038: we started with 18 BG 4.0s this time. We could have made it work if we were diligent about every other day washing but 3 set days a week works better for me. I also line dry for sun so that seemed to slow things down a little with my process. So I bought 6 more on Black Friday and now I am totally happy with 24! We do use disposables overnight and we do send cloth to daycare too.

@peaches1038 I have a big guy, starting at about 5 months we have been using thirties size 2 covers with hemp babies prefolds and fleece bamboo charchole doublers. We have also used wool covers from time to time. They are great, but a pain to wash. Sometimes I use prefolds instead of the hemp ones and that's OK too. The thing that helps is mixing fibers.
For a while he was wetting through all that some nights, but not any more.
It makes a huge diaper... His night tone diapers don't fit in footie pjs.

I have 18. I have a combo of BG 4.0s, 5.0s, and Freetimes. I like the pocket diapers the best. I wash 2-3 times a week. I wash in the evenings and put a disposable on her overnight when I'm washing the diapers. If I wanted to keep her in cloth 100% of the time then I would get 4 more.
