I like 1 (unless it's a saturated color that requires 2 coats for even coloring), with base and top. One coat usually holds up better for longer!

I am a polish FREAK. My routine:
- Prep and file nails
- 1 coat base coat (Orly bonder)
- 2-3 THIN coats of polish, depending on brand/formula
- 1 coat seche vite top coat (or 2 coats Essie Good to Go when I'm pregnant.)
ESPECIALLY with the seche vite, it lasts forever! Oh and always let polish dry at least 5 minutes between coats, especially the main color, and ESPECIALLY if it's unusually warm or cold. Anddddd... wow, I just said especially a lot of times

These days, I usually just go with a shellac or gel mani - dries immediately and lasts 2 weeks!

@kjpugs: I'm with you on the polish obsession!
I do the same. One coat base, usually two coats color, one kick butt top coat (I use Out the Door or Seche Vite).

I'm not a base coat user but always do 2-3 thin coats of polish, depending on the saturation of the color (letting it dry in between) then finish with Seche Vite top coat.

@Littlebit: glad I'm not alone! It makes SUCHHHH a difference!
@MrsBrewer: I wish! It's more fun painting others' nails than my own!

Usually two very thin coats of colored polish, then a clear shiny top coat to seal from chipping.

I am so, so, so bad at painting my own nails.
I have tried everything. Brand new nail polish, waiting up to an HOUR between thin thin thin coats... seche vite top coat and a good base coat... shaking the polish between coats, rolling the polish back and forth between coats...
No matter what I do, the polish is thick and gloppy, and even if I don't touch it AT ALL until the next day, it's totally malleable and gets dented the first time I wear shoes. Or I get sheet marks. Or I just stick my fingernail in to see if it's dry and it sinks right in. I'm talking 12 hours later, people.
I think I'm just really really bad at it

It depends on the nail polish. I usually use two coats but can sometimes get away with only one coat.
