Oh man.. My parents always went WAY overboard, and still do. Now that my mom has 4 "kids", her two plus our husbands, we get less but still crazy. We all get at least 30 each just from her, so it's going to be crazy town for LO too!

Last year we only got him one thing from DH and I but he was like a month old. This year he'll get probably less than 5 from us. I'm sure the older he gets the bigger the number will get. I am a cheap-o, so I don't buy toys for LO "just because". In fact, I have not bought him a single toy just because since he was born. Only birthdays & holidays..so Christmas is our time to go overboard and we intend to once he's older and know's what he's getting!

I mean.... probably around 20 once you count the gifts she will get from family.

Probbaly 5-6 under the tree and then I wrap everything in the stocking - so that's another 10 right there

1 from brother and 1 from sister - that's 2

1 from grandparents

4 from my mom

so around 22?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: 2 hours to unwrap 40 gifts? My kids would have that open in 10 mins!

I don't really know, but I put 8-14.

He's getting 1-2 gifts from us. Then I'm guessing one gift from SIL, one from my brother, one from FIL and SMIL, 0-1 from MIL, one from my BFF, and probably 3-5 from my parents.

I grew up in a poor country and the excesses I see around Christmas still shock me. LO will only be 9 months at Christmas and I'd like to get him 1 gift. I don't think our family will go crazy with gifts, so I'm hoping we only have about 4 total. Gifts won't mean a thing to him at that age, but I want a precedent reflecting moderation set. We are trying to live a bit more minimalist and LO always plays longest with non-toys anyway (pots, pans, wooden utensils, laundry pile).

Honestly probably a ton. I do Christmas pretty big and she's the first grandchild, niece, goddaughter etc on my side, we own a business and have longtime clients and friends who love to spoil her...

We wrapped everything in tissue paper when my kids were little - its so easy to tear apart!

@mrs. Lemon-lime I think needs are things like bedding, travel accessories (suitcase, backpack)... Just something to unwrap that you would need to get regardless at some point. I think it could also be unfun clothes like basics or Pjs or undies. As far as a toy, it could be a toy that is age appropriate for development? I like the idea of having a guideline for the amount of gifts as a tradition into adulthood.

My parents usually don't go crazy, they're pretty reasonable, maybe one or two gifts from them.

My in-laws go NUTS. It frustrates me a little, but that's an entirely different story.

We usually get 3 or 4 gifts for the kids to unwrap. Usually one from us, and two or 3 from Santa. + stockings. We also do 2 "family" gifts from santa so they get to open those too.

Unfortunately my MIL goes overboard. I don't even know how many gifts my DS got from them last year because they just kept piling up! It was definitely way too many.

Only a few from us. We plan to do something you need, something you wear, something to read, something to share. Plus a couple stocking stuffers. I don't want to even think about how many gifts they will get from my in laws. Last year I had about 20 gifts to open and I'm an adult! I imagine it will be a little crazy.

Luckily, our parents don't go nuts. My parents get him one or two gifts and my ILs get him one or two plus a stocking. If people give him gifts early or send them in the mail, we open them early. My husband doesn't like this, but I do because it's way less overwhelming. If Liam is opening gift after gift he gets tired and cranky and just wants to play with his stuff instead of opening more. We get him 4-5 gifts usually, plus a stocking.

1 big one from mommy & daddy, a few small toys for us as well. 1 from santa. 3-4 from grandparents. and then all her friends that will probably get her something small since we also get them something small. So probably around the range of 15+

Yeah, I'm that parent who goes overboard. I also have a big family so B will have lots of gifts to open. I don't think lots of gifts automatically equals a spoiled, ungrateful child.

ETA: Lots of gifts doesn't mean expensive gifts either. He is getting one large gift (a kitchen) and smaller gifts like books, cars, and art supplies.

i think we'll give the kids 1-2 gifts each. something educational and something fun. we didn't give gifts growing up, so all this is pretty new to me!

@twodoghouse: that's a great idea! A lot of those toys are big and expensive and really not *just* for one child

I put 8-14. We spent most of our christmas budget for lo on a climber for the backyard this month...he is still so young that i doubt he will notice, and i know he will get plenty from his grandparents. I would imagine he will get 3-4 items from each set of grandparents, maybe one from his uncle and another from his aunt, and 3-4 little things from us. I feel like that is plenty for a 1 year old! Although as it gets closer I know i am going to want to buy him all the things! Having a tight budget will help with that for sure
