@Bao: We paid $250+ month from Nov-April and less May-Oct for our old place which was about 1400 square feet and was natural gas heated.
Our new place has propane heat and has been over $500/month to heat since we moved in; and that's with keeping the house no more than 68 (less at night and during the day when we are not home) and shutting off 3 rooms upstairs because we don't use them and having brand new windows and very good insulation. It sucks; everything in New England is expensive
Electricity for both places is a constant additional roughly $100/month.

about 2600 square feet of finished space. We want more room though.

Our house is 3150sqft not counting the basement. It's our forever home, so it's perfect for us.

We have about 3200 including the finished basement. 2600 on the main floors. Its a lot right now for just the two of us, but I hope it will feel right once we have kids. Even then I think I would have liked a bit smaller. Heating is too expensive.
2 spare rooms are still completely empty.

We have 2400 plus a basement, for just us and our dog it is way too big but once we have children I think it will be just perfect. We are in an area where buying an appropriately sized house for 2 people and they moving again in 3 years doesn't make sense so we went straight to a forever home.

I want to say 3800, but we haven't been utilizing the top floor just yet, since we have no furniture up there

lol we're going from about 2000 to 700 (300 more in finished basement). I'm excited about lower heating bills!

@sorrycharlie: did you guys find a new place?? that is quite a downsizing!
pomelo / 5178 posts
We're currently in 2500 square feet but it's much bigger than we need; we only actually use about 1800 square feet.

@mrs. bird: we think so!! we're renting from ILs, so huge 2-story apt, but our budget for buying is higher than what we pay now, but still low, if that makes sense. they give us a wicked deal. the house we're looking at is in good area, but small, lol

About 1800 but that doesn't include the basement. It isn't finished yet but easily 1100-1200 sq feet down there.

2516 and since baby #2 I feel like it got a lot smaller! We will have to move in a few years

We live in Hawaii and our house is only 900sf but it has an "efficient" layout, no space is wasted and it doesn't feel too tight. We have 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, just the 2 of us with our 4 month old and our beagle. It's the perfect size, I think. Not much to clean! However, we have definitely had to get creative in order to maximize storage space! 2600sf sounds lovely!

We're in 1900 sf right now, and it feels small. The house we are building will be a bit under 2500. I would have liked a bit more, but it's what we could afford in the neighborhood we wanted.

1100, but it feels a lot bigger. This is the biggest place either of us has lived in, but I imagine that it will feel cramped when we bring LO home.

Our house is 1200 sq ft but the floor plan isn't all that great at maximizing the space we do have, so it seems/feels smaller. We're house hunting at 2000+ sqft homes, but don't want something TOO big! Just something we can grow into and not feel crammed once we have a 2nd baby.

@littlek: holy moley!!! Does that feel huge?!?
Our 2 bed/1 bath apt is about 1,000 sq ft. It's a decent size but I wish we have moe storage and an office nook.
bananas / 9973 posts
2000 sq. ft. It's twice as big as our condo we were in before, but I know it'd be nice to have a little more space in the future with a specific "play room/area."

Our house is about 900. We'll be buying in a year or so and I'm hoping for 2000-2500.

We are at 2200 sq feet. We moved here from a 600 sq ft apt so this place felt huge by comparison ... We wondered how we would ever fill it up, but now it's completely filled!

Current/house for sale is 1470 sq ft w/ unfinished basement.
Lifer house (August!) Is 1654 sq ft of bungalow and we'll finish the basement right away.....it'll be more than enough space!

Just about 1000 sqft and it's crowded! I have twin 2 1/2 year olds and a 3 month old. We have no storage, no basement, no attic, just three bedroom closets!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
About 2000, not including a finished basement. I'd like about 3000, honestly!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
1,445sq ft and I think the size is perfect for me, the hubby, and our on-the-way LO. However, I just wish it had more storage space. I don't think the house was built very effectively. I'd love to move to a bigger home though! Something between 2,600-3,400 sq ft would be awesome when we have 2 LO's.

@Mrs. Pen: It feels big at times, there are still a lot of rooms that are empty because we are decorating one room at a time.
We live in VA so our heating/cooling bill isn't crazy.

Our one bedroom apartment is currently 885 sq ft. we are moving in a coupleof months to a bigger place
