With M, we had 4 ultrasounds. If we had another, I would probably opt for only 1. They are so expensive!!!

I've literally had so many this time I can't rememeber. They found a complication they are keeping tabs on. I honestly think it's a variation of normal and all these tests have been unecessary. Wish I could go back and opt for only 1!!!

too many to count. One for NT and anatomy scans, then in my third trimester, i started getting biweekly, then weekly because i was high risk with high blood pressure and they needed to check that growth was on track. I wouldn't do it differently, it was medically recommended and i loved getting to see my babe so often!
eta. In Canada, I didn't have to worry about cost though as it was all covered.

@californiadreams: I don't remember, I blocked it out of my mind. All I remember are all the 0's I saw next to each line item for "ultrasound".

I had 3 with DS1, which was a good amount. With DS2 I had too many to count. Yes it was expensive but it gave me peace of mind knowing we were checking on him weekly.

With DS we had a dating u/s and anatomy scan covered by insurance. We paid for an elective 2d in 3rd trim
With DS2, we had a dating u/s, a quick scan at 11 wks by OB, and NT Scan, and anatomy scan. Mostly covered by insurance, but early in the year and we hadn't met our deductible yet (ouch!).
We are considering doing a 3d one in third trimester again, but we'll see.

With DD, I had 4: 2 dating, 1 elective gender scan, 1 anatomy scan. This new OB seems like they do a lot more. I'll have to see my comfort level of it!
pomelo / 5791 posts
I had something like 6 with DS1. With DS2, I've had 4 so far, and will have a 3D as well. My insurance covers them.

I had so many I don't remember the number! 2 before the initial dating scan because I had very bad implantation cramps and ectopic pregnancy was a concern.
Then I had kidney stones so 1 for that. Then the regular dating and the anatomy.
Everything was good until around 30 weeks when my ob decided I was measuring small and I had an ultrasound every other appointment to confirm she was growing well.
I feel I had too many. Once it was confirmed that despite a small bump she was growing well I don't think the others were necessary.

I had a lot last time, probably 8 or 9. Three in the first trimester and then monthly afterwards because of GD.
No GD this time (yet!), but I've been seen at MFM since my NT scan because my first pregnancy was miscarried due to a chromosomal abnormality. I think I'll probably have monthly ultrasounds this time because they did my anatomy scan there and then wanted to see me again in 4-6 weeks, like last time. Plus, I have a blood antibody issue that they are keeping an eye on.
I'm okay with it because it gives me some extra comfort that things are progressing normally. Thankfully, my insurance covers everything except a small co-pay at each visit.

3: 8 wk (the CNP pushed it for us during our initial intake appointment due to a previous MC), 12 wk NT, and 21 wk anatomy, plus a quick one when I was being admitted to L&D to check positioning, but I don't think that counts
I'd do the same next time, I guess? I dunno, I wish I had seen him more, though!

I've had one at every appointment, at 22 weeks, I've lost count as to how many that makes. After 3 losses, I wouldn't have it any other way.
And as much as I complain about living in Switzerland, our healthcare is really good. So I think it's all covered. No idea how much they cost.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
My OB does a quick ultrasound at every appointment (plus the big anatomy scan). I've had 7 so far and I'm only 27 weeks!
ETA: my only cost for these was a $25 copay on the anatomy scan.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I also had one at every appointment, in my OBs office. The first 2 were transvaginal, but after that they were the standard ones. I also delivered my son in Switzerland, and while the health care is fantastic, it is not free. While I paid nothing out of pocket to my doctor, I paid the equivalent of $250 per month to my health insurance company.

I had too many to count - NT and anatomy, then was diagnosed with GD, so had one every two weeks until 38+5 when I had a c section.

I literally got one every time I went, esp I had GD too. I didn't mind, I enjoy see my lil nugget in there and being reassured that she was healthy & growing!

I had 6 or 7 ultrasounds with LO1, there were 3 later in the pregnancy because of a low lying placenta and then around 36 weeks because I measured smaller than the previous weeks so they wanted to check (he had just changed positions). They were all covered.
With LO2, in Austria, I had an ultra sound at every check up with my OB (standard procedure here, he never once measured my belly, but measured the baby's head/abdomen with the U/S machine). I also had the NT and anatomy scan at a separate facility, which was out of pocket.
eggplant / 11716 posts
With LO #1, I had 4 total--a dating scan at 8 weeks, NT scan at 14 weeks, anatomy scan at 20 weeks, and a scan for positioning at 38 weeks (my doctor thought I was transverse but I did a bunch of spinning babies stuff for 2 weeks and was pretty sure LO had turned).
With #2, I'll have 3 total unless there's another size/position issue towards the end.
Just for funsies, I wouldn't mind more because I love seeing my baby and relaxing my anxiety---and my scans are all 100% covered by my insurance. But I'm okay with just the standard 3-4.

With Lucas, I had 4, 8-wk dating, NT, anatomy, and a check-up (some-time between 24 and 30 wks I think) because of low-lying placenta. This was perfect (and I would have been fine without the last one, if the placenta hadn't been a potential issue) as a first time mom with no worries about baby's health.
This time, I've had 5 and have 1 more scheduled (should be last one, unless they find something worrying). The same 8-wk dating, NT, anatomy, then follow-ups at 24, 28, and 34 wks to check on the renal pyelectasis they found at the anatomy scan. I don't know how I would have survived without thorough check-ins after 20 wks. I just know now that there is so much that can go wrong that I never really considered when I was pregnant with Lucas. Everytime they tell me that everything looks ok I think that maybe he'll be ok
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
I had 4. One dating, one anatomy and two for post-dates. I would have been happy enough with just the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I've had two so far and I'm planning on at least 3 more. I'd have a quick ultrasound weekly if I could! I like the reassurance. I'm on edge until my next appointment after my last one.

Had a ton last time, and looks like there will be quite a few this a time, as I have an SCH they want to monitor. They don't cost us anything, so that's not an issue. I do question whether they definitely have 100% no negative effects, so back before I got pregnant the first time I planned to have as few as possible. But after everything, even if I had no complications this time I would request extra ones for peace of mind.

@lamariniere: same here! One u/s every appt, and an NT scan and anatomy scan at a high risk place (better machines I guess?). I didn't pay anything for any of the u/s though.
grapefruit / 4584 posts
One every appointment for me too, plus extras for early complications with DD1. It is sooo reassuring; I'll be a wreck if/when I have #3 now that we live someplace where so many arent standard.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I only had 3. Dating, NT scan, and anatomy. I think I maybe paid $50 out of pocket for all 3. I expect the same next go around.

I had a ton (went through IVF and had twins, so I had an US at every RE, OB and MFM appointment). I wish I'd had a couple more at the MFM, actually. They released me from the hospital at 32.5 weeks onto bedrest and said they didn't need to see me anymore. At that point both babies were measuring just over 4 lbs. Six weeks later Blake was born 4 lb 15 oz. we don't know if it was placenta issues, growth restriction due to my size and having two in there, or if the earlier estimates were just wrong (obviously they can be and often are! Though more commonly babies measure large and are smaller than they think). My kids are healthy and I know that's all that matters, but I do wonder if MFM would have caught this if I hadn't been released early.

With DD1, I had 5. 3 medical and 2 elective (gender and 3D)
With DD2 so far I've had 3 medical and will have one more, and have had one elective and will have one more. I had bleeding early and they did an u/s for that, then the typical 8weeks-ish, then NT. Anatomy will be in 2 weeks.
For the medical ones our copay is $50 so it doesn't bother me too much. The elective ones were slightly more.

I've had a lot..I had a few in 1st tri after my IVF, then my NT scan, gender scan, anatomy scan, 28 week and having one tomorrow at 36 weeks. I didn't have to pay for any of them (minus the first few at the RE clinic) the rest were covered by insurance.
It gave me a lot of peace of mind throughout my pregnancy.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
Last time I had 3 - dating, anatomy, and one at 35w when she had decreased movement and was showing possible distress on the fetal monitor. Luckily everything was fine.
This time I'll probably have 2 - dating and anatomy, barring any complications
grapefruit / 4455 posts
With DD, I had a dating, an NT, the anatomy scan, and one later on to check on the placenta, plus one elective one. So four medical ones and an elective. This pregnancy, I think I've had seven (edited, recounted) so far, and the NT will be my eighth. I'd rather have not had any bleeding or issues in pregnancy than have had all the ultrasounds, but I'm glad I got them because it was the only way for us to know what was going on in there.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
6! 2 were elective. If I could go back I'd skip the 3D because she wouldn't show her face so it was sort of a waste. Insurance covered my non-elective but even if they were expensive I'd do the NT and anatomy scans at a minimum.
persimmon / 1447 posts
Just 1 with DS- the anatomy scan.
Something like 6 with DD- 10 wk dating scan, anatomy scan, 3rd tri measurements, and then biweekly at the end since I had GDM.
This time I've only had 2- dating and anatomy.
I wouldn't change anything with any of the pregnancies as I feel what was in baby's best interest was done.
nectarine / 2262 posts
I've had a ton and I'm only 17 weeks! I got pg through IUI, so I had like 3-4 at the RE's office before I "graduated" to the OB. Then, I had a SCH so I had 2 extra. My OB did one at 10 weeks to check the status of the SCH. Then the NT scan at 12 weeks. Then just had another one at 16 weeks.
So, thus far I've had, like, 7-8 I'm having the 20 week scan, and because they found some potential issues on my 16 week scan (low lying placenta/possible placenta previa and echogenic bowel), the MFM already told me they are going to have to do more u/s especially in the 3rd tri to check the placenta and keep an eye on baby's growth (echogenic bowel at risk for IUGR).
pomegranate / 3375 posts
I had 3. I'll probably skip the 1st trimester screen next time, and just do a dating scan and the anatomy scan.
honeydew / 7504 posts
I had 10 - the NT scan at 10/11 weeks and the anatomy scan at 20-ish weeks. I had one at 12 weeks due to positive toxoplasmosis screen, then had one biweekly from 12-26 weeks to monitor the length of my cervix due to a prior cervical LEEP procedure.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
3 with DD1. One dating, one NT and one elective for fun. They were all under $50 after insurance.
Only dating and NT with DD2.
clementine / 972 posts
2! Standard is 1 but I fibbed that I didn't remember my last period so I could get the dating one. Wish we had more! Especially since you go so long from 18 weeks til the end.
