How many weeks were you when you needed maternity clothes in your first pregnancy? I'm wondering when i'm going to need them. I'm seven weeks and my boobs have exploded and nothing fits right in the top. I also feel like I'm already getting a small belly. It doesn't help that I was on hormones to get pregnant and that I was at the high end of my weight range to begin with.

I bought some maternity pants at 12 weeks. I was a little crazy and didn't want to jinx things by buying maternity clothes earlier than that. I'm 13 weeks now and pants are the only thing I need maternity clothes for. My regular pants pinch my belly. All of my other clothes fit me fine though. I'm pretty large chested to begin with so most of my clothes have a lot of room in the boob area.

I didnt NEED them until close to 30 weeks. My boobs got big for the first 10 weeks then went back down. But Im also super long in my torso, so I carried small. How far along are you?

My boobs also exploded after 8-9 weeks. I started wearing maternity shirts and dresses for work due to the fact I looked like a hooker in most of my non-pregnancy ones! My belly didn't pop until 18-19 weeks.
This weekend was the last weekend I will be able to wear my normal jeans. I had to unbutton them at the restaurant we were eating at!

I'm 12w and just bought some maternity pants. I don't need them yet, but they are very comfortable!
I haven't gained weight at this point. All of my tops still fit (was already an E cup when I got pregnant). My lower abdomen is getting firmer/fuller, so normal pants are starting to dig in when I sit.
The need for different clothes seems to be very dependent on your starting size/build.

I think I was around 24 weeks... A lot of people didn't really notice until 28, though.

I finally gave in & got maternity jeans 2-3 weeks ago, so I was around 15 weeks...
I was able to get away with the elastic band holding the button, but then I was having to un-button & un-zip and the bella band wasn't covering enough.
I can still wear a bunch of my skirts, dresses, it's mostly just the pants, at least for now - the belly is getting bigger faster now!

@kayakgirl73: I'm about 6 weeks and constantly bloated, so I'm definitely having issues with some of my pants. Especially after I eat a meal.

I started wearing the maternity pants at 8-9 weeks, but I had some MAJOR bloating (I have IBS). Turns out that I was/am pregnant with twins and started showing really early, so I'm glad I had the pants on hand! I can still fit into some regular tops (stretchy one) but the maternity tops are much more comfy. I'm 25 weeks but measuring 29w!

I didn't need maternity tops until about 22 weeks (I am 25 weeks now, and I have a pretty small bump); even now I am still able to wear some semi-fitted non-maternity tops and dresses. However, I was pretty bloated in my legs and belly (*le sigh*), and bought maternity skirts for work at around 14 weeks. It was so worth it not to fight with my slim-fitting pencil skirts and slacks! Once I put them on, they were so comfortable that I kicked myself for not buying a few maternity pieces a couple of weeks earlier.
There is no *right* time to start buying maternity clothes. At this point, I am a huge proponent in making yourself as comfortable as possible for as long as possible, which includes buying maternity clothes.

@jessiejo17: Yes it tis the boobs that are the worst I have some dresses that I though would work for quite a while, but I'm looking for more boobatastic that I should be at work. UGh.

I think it also depends on your wardrobe. I'm pretty slender and while I don't wear "tight" clothes, I wore form fitting clothes. So my clothes started to seem a little too tight around 10 weeks, but noticeably to other people around 12 weeks. I used the bella band until about 14-15 weeks. Then I bought maternity pants, and ohmygosh, don't know why I fought it so hard! They are comfy and don't even look like maternity. I find that a lot of maternity shirts are still too big for me (17 weeks), so I'm just making do with some flowy-er shirts.

I started wearing maternity pants at around 16 weeks. I could still technically fit in my regular pre-maternity pants but I didn't want to "squish" the baby. haha. Plus, if you're going to end up buying maternity pants anyway, might as well wear them early and get more use out of them. Seriously, maternity pants are so COMFY!

I was similar to you, my regular clothing at the time of getting pregnant was already tight because I had gained some weight. I've been in maternity pants since 7 weeks and never looked back.

I was in some shirts around 13 weeks, mainly for comfort (they were longer and fit my boobs better). Pants were a necessity around 15/16 weeks...I am now 18 weeks and can s till fit into some of my pants, but am loving my maternity pants.

I actually wore my regular clothes until about 6 months.

@highwire: I guess I should think about the mall soon. It's too bad that most of sister's maternity stuff disappeared, in a move, although her due dates were Set and Oct and I'm due in January so different seasons. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to spend too much because my second and 3rd tri's will really span the seasons.

I didnt need maternity clothes for a while around 19 weeks I bought bella band and that helped me for a while, I didnt really need maternity pants until about week 25

@highwire: That's true I was just hoping if I could avoid maternity until later on I might not need summer stuff that I would she need fall and winter stuff. Unfortunately being old means most of my friends are long done and passed on clothes will be limited if any.

@kayakgirl73: I'm on the opposite side. No friends have been pregnant around me yet (I'm 24). Luckily my wonderful MIL bought my whole entire maternity wardrobe during that shopping trip at 7 weeks.
I can say on here anytime "yeah, go buy clothes immediately as soon as you want them", but its not always that easy to go spend a ton of money on clothes in one big chunk like that.
Either way, maybe just a few pieces right now (like some comfortable pants) to start with, and adding a few things here and there as you go, and as the weather changes, you can see what you need then?

@Highwire: I agree with you regarding piecing your maternity wardrobe together as you go along. In the beginning (at 14 weeks), I bought 2 maternity skirts and 2 or 3 shirts for work (I am still wearing all of these), and a couple of longer tanks to wear around the house. I really only needed the maternity skirts in the first trimester, and it wasn't until I hit the second trimester that I even started to fill out the more fitted shirts and tanks. Now, at 25 weeks, I am finally starting to look pregnant, although my bump is pretty small compared to some (most people think I am 18-20 weeks, for whatever that's worth). I fully expected to have a bump by 20 weeks, but at 25 weeks, I still don't have a bump as big as I thought I would at 20 weeks. It's just so hard to predict how you will carry and where you will need extra room. I would definitely recommend doing it (putting your wardrobe together) in phases, buying basis that can be dressed up/down with accessories and shoes, and watch for on sale items and promotions for free shipping (if you shop online), etc.

I'm almost 15 now and I've been wearing maternity shorts/bella band for several weeks now. I could wear my regular shorts still, but they pinch, and why not switch over sooner? My maternity shirts are still too big, but sometimes I wear them anyway because the longer length helps cover the belly bands.

I think I bought my first pair of pants maybe at 12 weeks, but by 17 weeks I was 100% maternity clothes. Never looked back and it was great! Still wearing maternity pants almost 3 weeks PP.

I'm 16w4d today. I bought a couple maternity pieces last week, but haven't worn them yet because 1) my normal clothes are from when i was about 7-10 lbs heavier, so a lot of stuff still fits, and i've only gained about 1-2 lbs and 2) because the extra weight that I carried was always in the belly and I bought clothes that would disguise it or had some extra room there without looking too big. So a lot of things still fit. With regard to work clothes, I wear suits every day, so I don't zip up the skirt all the way and put a safety pin under the zipper so it doesn't creep down during the day, and my jacket covers it! Hopefully i'll remember not to bend over to pick something up and flash everyone my unzipped skirt. I know this doesn't help much, but maybe you could do the unzipped skirt/jacket trick if you have to.
