Bennett turns 2 on the 20th, and he has a lot - I can't even guess, he's talking in full sentences. He really went through a serious language explosion in the last few months.

My 19 month old is up to about 65 (I'm guilty of writing them down!). She goes through bursts where she picks up several new words all at once.

N is 17 months (1.5 on the 15th) and she has about 50+ words and has had a few 2-3 word sentences. She repeats a lot of what I say. It's really fun to have real conversations with her. My first was average to late talker and my second was even later so this is new to me. DS started to parrot until 21 months and DD started at 24 months.

DD is 21 months and I can't even count anymore. She's talking in short sentences lately and has new words everyday. Sometimes I feel bad because I can't keep track of all the words she knows and I have NO CLUE what she's saying sometimes and you can tell she gets a bit frustrated. She's always been pretty vocal and had a large number of words starting around 17-18 months I'd say?

My LO is like @futuremama: At 16 months he said mama, dada, and hi. I was a little worried. By 18-19 months, I lost count of his words. Now he's 21 months and he talks a ton.

My son is almost 22 months and picks up new words all the time! He says so much. But not really sentences yet. He says things like "mouse! Eat! Cheese!" But not "the mouse eats cheese"

And he says a few words together like "seeyalater". And "are youuuu _____ (whatever he's looking for)?" Instead of where are you.

Lo is 21 months and I stopped counting words when we hit about 75 which was when she was about 17 months. She repeats just about everything!

LO 1 didn't have many words until 20 months. Maybe 10 around 16 months?

LO 2 had hundreds! I had to keep track for the EArly intervention teacher.

DS had maybe 30-50 words until his language explosion in September at 22m. Now he has hundreds and speaks in 3 and 4 word sentences.

Wow, HB has some advanced babies, or I'm not giving F enough credit for some talking attempts.

Anyways, he has about 20-25 of what I consider words at almost 18 months.

@skipra: that is hilarious! we got in the habit of saying "good girl" to our dog every time she obeyed a command when got her as a crazy puppy like 4-5 years ago. now DS seriously thinks it's her name - he goes around the room and points to everyone and says "mama, dada, (his name), good girl." great party trick, though!

@jape14: T calls my parent's dog "bad" and will try to discipline him.

@LBee: omg I love it! I count animal noises too - J calls a chicken a "bawk bawk" and a horse a "neigh neigh."

@skipra: haha my son calls our dog by her name, but every once in a while bends right down to her face and says hi baby!!! So funny.

A (20 months) probably has 50-75? I stopped counting. She will repeat anything I say (or attempt to), but I don't know if that counts as additional words. She just recently started stringing words together into 2-3 word sentences.

B (also 20 months) has maybe 25-30 words, plus a few more sounds that he uses consistently (he says "nuh" for nurse and milk. Does that count as a word?). He's been getting more words recently, but does not speak as clearly or as much as his twin sister.

at 16 months, he had exactly 3 words. Now, at 19 months, he has too many for me to count. He picks up a few new words every day. He doesn't speak in sentences yet though.

Our pediatrician told us at LO's 12 month appointment that she would be asking us how many words LO has at the 15 month appointment. So my husband started a Google spreadsheet that he shared with me to keep track, as we both doubted we would be able to accurately keep track of more than 5 words between sleep deprivation and our crazy jobs -- the Google spreadsheet is perfect because we can both edit it from our phones to add LO's new words before we forget them. He loves tracking this. Each word is one row so it's easy to count, too. Just a tip for other super nerdy mamas/papas out there! (Also, for fun, and to preserve the memory, which I know we will forget, the first column of a given row is the "real" word that we know LO is trying to say, while the second column of the row is her actual pronunciation of it, so "shower" -> "shau shau" or "berry"-> "wee wee")

At 12 months she didn't have any words other than "agua" and "dada", but she started picking them up pretty quickly at 14 months and lately she has been on fire. She just turned 17 months and she has 214 words, according to our Google sheet. We don't count animal sounds (I suppose she has a dozen or so of those) and we count words that she says in both Spanish and English as one word (so she sometimes says "bear" and sometimes says "oso" but I count that as one word on our list--same for "hand"/"manos", "gracias"/"thank you", etc). Our other rule is she has to say the word multiple times to us (nanny telling us she is saying a given word isn't good enough) in the correct context and unprompted in order to add it (so we are sure she knows what she is saying, it has become part of her vocabulary and she is not just parroting).

I think the fact that we have an easy way to record the words she is using (and we can use the search function to make sure we don't already have a given word on the list) means that she gets "full credit" for all her words, which I'm sure she wouldn't get if we were relying on unreliable human (parental) memory. I bet after you get beyond 40-50 words most folks actually underestimate the number of words their LO has.

Also, I think every kid's language explosion hits at a different time and hers is clearly happening right now. I can't wait for more sentences and word combinations - only a few of those so far. Mostly she just seems to like labeling things and activities - especially the ones she wants to be able to request (like "more drawing!" - her constant refrain since she got an easel and crayons for Christmas; since she only has access to the crayons under supervision she has need for the neverending verbal requests!).

Uh, my son is turning 16 months tomorrow and the only word he's used correctly in context so far is "bop" which is the Korean word for "rice" or "food." He calls his new Cozy Coupe his "ba-bang" which is what Koreans call a car in baby talk. He also quacks like a Korean duck and says "kek-kek." He roars when he sees a picture of a lion sometimes.

I just looked back to my list I made and he had 35 words at 18 months. By 2 years he was speaking in full sentences and singing full songs so it really exploded between 18-24 months.
