We got a quote from our vet for neutering our little Leroy and it was close to $700 CAD!! Is this typical? He's a small dog (7.5lbs).
How much did it cost to neuter or spay your dog?

we have a pet insurance thing that costs $300? a year and it covered it in full (plus all vaccines, etc. throughout the year), out of pocket i think was $150-$200 for iv, procedure, meds.
$700 seems ridic to me!
we have a 12 lb yorkie and an 18 lb beagle terrier... they were probably around 7-10 lbs at the time of the procedure

Holy cow! I only have cat experience but we have a low cost neuter/spay clinic for dogs and cats and its $20 for dogs, $10 for cats. And that included medication and a cone as well.

Wow, that is A LOT! Especially for a small dog!! The most I've seen is around $400 CAD for a giant breed dog WITH IV fluids AND Pre-Anesthetic bloodwork. And I thought that was expensive. Small guys usually cost less...
I would personally price check around with other vets and see if you can find a reputable one with a better price.

Wow. I think mine cost 250-300. This was 7 years ago though.

@pui: Yeah that's INSANE. We paid about $200 I think (it was a while ago) for our Leroy. He was probably around 15 lbs at the time.

Get another quote!!! I was told that getting them neutered the costs are mainly dependent on the weight of the dog. We are getting our dog neutered on Thursday actually and we were quoted around $300, but we also have a 10 month old 85 lb chocolate lab!!!

I think we paid about $450 for a spay (at a regular vet) and $125 for neuter (at a low-cost clinic).

What!? That's insane. We took both of our dogs to the animal control center, where it's $40 for spay/neuter + microchip + rabies shot. Call your local pound and see if they have other options. Neutering is an incredibly easy and quick procedure and should be nowhere near $700. I think our vet only charges $250 for it.

There was a spay/neuter clinic that was around $40-$50. The regular vet was around $300, so we went with the former! Definitely check around to see if there's a low-cost clinic in your area.

My dog was already spayed, but we just paid $400 USD for my female cat to be spayed/teeth cleaned.

Definitely get another quote. It cost about $250 USD to neuter my dog and that included abdominal surgery (he had an undescended testicle) and an overnight stay, 6 years ago. A normal neuter is a tiny incision, not even necessarily stitches or an overnight stay.
ETA: he's a pug, 15 lbs now, but just about 11 lbs then.

Ours was included in our adoption fee.
Do they have SPCA in Canada or a rescue perhaps with surgical facilities?

We paid that much for our pom. I think it's more for smaller dogs?
ETA: she's female, so spayed. not sure how much our golden doodle will cost to be neutered.

Around $350 for neuter and a spay for my two doggies at their regular vet which I think included blood work, iv, and the meds after also. That seems really high! My boy was 7.5lbs and my girl 4lbs at the time of the procedure.

My dog was about 250-300 to spay and the cat was neutured as part of his adoption fee which was around $50. I would definitely get another quote!

$100 to adopt our little Boston Terrier mix from the SPCA, which included spay (they wouldn't let us take her unless she was spayed). I believe the SPCA also has a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for non-shelter animals as well.

We adopted. The adoption fee to the rescue was $300 which included spaying and a microchip.

@pui: our spay in Ontario was about $650. I called a dozen different vets and that was the lowest I could find. A few places were over a thousand.
There is a province wide low cost spay and neuter program but their wait list was over a year for a spay. Made me rethink getting a female.
