We are probably not the best comparison, but for my 3 yo's party we just got two trays of 12 cupcakes from the grocery store (not custom) and a super sized birthday girl cupcake. If I remember correctly, I think it was about $20 total.

We had a pretty phenomenal 3-tier Minnie Mouse fondant cake done and it was $185. I think her 2 tiers were like $150. It looked just like this one, and each tier was a different flavor and had different icing. I balked at the price at first, but we had around the same amount of people you're having and we had plenty of cake, and it was the centerpiece of the party...

ETA: The baker put the different flavors of icing under the fondant, so no one really eats all that fondant- just slid it off, we all just ate the icing underneath that matches the flavor of that layer, but the fondant sure made it pretty!

I made cupcakes, and probably spent about $10-$15 on ingredients.

About $40 for the cake I served and I made her smash cake so that was like $3.

I made cake and cupcakes for her first birthday and for her second got a buttercream icing (I don't like fondant, no matter how pretty it is) cake from our local grocer that was themed and less than $40.

We spent like $40 on some gourmet mini cupcakes in three different flavors. No big cake though. I didn't want to deal with cutting.

In the past? Enough for a box mix + icing. This year is actually the first year that I'm having someone else make my children's cake and honestly... it's kind of a relief! One less thing on my plate! Woot! We're actually having about 18-20 cupcakes done and a small cake beside for DS's birthday. It's going to cost us $40 but it's one less thing I have to worry about especially since decorating is not my strong suit!

Her first birthday cake was done by a family baker friend for $75, and she threw in the smash cake. This year a local cake decorator is making a two tier cake for $85, which is actually the cheapest I found. I found her on a local small business page. Everyone else was charging $4-6/serving, which would've been $160-240... YIKES.

I just baked her test cake for her first birthday in two weeks. I need to cut the layers more evenly, and something is a little off about the icing...maybe it needs to be whipped more? But I'm pretty happy with it. Total cost: $20

It has been such a huge range! For a bakery cake, I have paid $175 for two tiers, decorated with fondant.

I've also done a very simple cookie cake, cost me $5.

I made DD's this year, but in the past I've gotten Sam's Club cupcakes, 30 for $15 and they are delicious! I've also had their sheet cake and it's good. I've never bought a "fancy" cake, I figured as long as it tastes good I'm fine.

Not a birthday cake, but we spent $73 on my sister's baby shower sheet cake. It was from the same bakery where my wedding cake was made and it was delicious! For my sister's shower, we got a 1/2 sheet cake so that we could have half it it chocolate and the other half white. The cake was suppose to feed 40 people and we had 33 people attend, so we knew we would have extra cake to take home. Everyone loves the cake so finding people to take home a slice was easy.
