I went to a high school that was public and "free" (other than property taxes).

But my college was out-of-state and not public, so it cost an arm and a leg. I think the official sticker price for my school was something like $27k a year... thankfully I got a lot of help from my college and the federal government (Pell Grants, etc.). We didn't have many assets as a family plus I declared my financial independence when I was 14, which helped me qualify for a number of grants. Plus I had 3 paper routes starting from 4th grade, which helped me save... and I also did temp work during every single fall/winter/spring/summer break of college, which helped pay for school...

All that stuff taught me a lot about hard work and hustle. And eventually, I was able to pay off all those student loans. All in all, college was a huge investment, but it turned out to be useful for me. I was lucky to be able to get a shot at the American dream... and will forever be grateful to both private college alumni donors and also to public funding for educational grants.

Still though, dang... my college education cost me $108k! And that's not even including the opportunity cost of my time. The crazy thing though is that I've heard that college tuition has doubled since I went to school?!?!!

How much did your education cost? Do you ever worry/despair about being able to afford college for your own kids?
