I'm just curious what other people's experience is. If it's a homemade gift, use the value of the materials and labor.

I have no clue but will guess around $100? (my mom)
Eta: MIL usually sends $10

Depends on the grandparent I think. One set spent around $100 for Xander's 2nd birthday, where another set probably spent closer to $50, and the last one spent maybe around $25. All depends on their financial situation really.
I didn't vote since it was all over the place.
ETA: Voted!

I know exactly how much they spend, because they ask for suggestions.

We have only gone through one gift holiday but I know their tendencies well. One set spends in the neighborhood of $100, the other more like $50-70 but she if a major deal seeker and the things she buys probably look more like $100+ worth of stuff.

My mom goes crazy - DD1 has a birthday this weekend and she already has a good 20 presents from my mom already here, not to mention all the stuff she is sending back with my ILs next week. I'd guess she spent around $400 this year on her birthday alone, not to mention the plethora of gifts she sends throughout the year as well. It is out of control and an issue we're trying to address. DH's parents spend around $100 I think.

I have enabled multiple votes, since there are usually multiple grandparents gifting.

I think in the $10-$30 range, on both sides. Our families don't do expensive gifts, generally speaking. We don't either! =)

They usually ask what to get for him. I keep it under $100 (honestly, closer to $50 if I think about it).

My parents don't get anything for the kids! They live in the middle of nowhere and it's hard to ship stuff. Plus they were never big birthday gifters when I was a kid.
My MIL gets stuff for the kids when she comes and visits (and when we visit). But nothing for birthdays in particular.

My in laws usually spend around $100, my parents usually spend $50-75. My parents have double the amount of grandkids so birthdays/Christmas add up a lot faster than for my in laws. They both ask me what we need though which is nice.

Looks like it really varies. I think it's nice when grandparents ask what your LO needs/wants. I usually end up with duplicates of the same toy, because they don't ask.

My parents spend $50 for my nephews' and niece's birthday, and that's what they spent on us growing up, so I imagine it'll be the same for our son.
My IL's think that money is how you show love, so they are exorbitant and it drives me insane. I'm sure it'll be over $200 for his birthday since they spend $200 on my husband and I for every occasion. They bring toys and clothes every time they visit and that's once a week (I could do a whole other thread about that one).
That kind of gift giving makes me uncomfortable. It comes from a good place (I think?) but I'm not used to it. And I think it makes my parents feel bad since they can't afford something like that.

My mom spends over $200. We live abroad and the shipping itself if already $100.

LO has 3 sets of grandparents:
My FIL and SMIL don't spend much on actual gifts (maybe $30?), but they gift LO $1k each birthday and Christmas for her 529 college-savings account.
My parents spend probably around $100 in gifts each birthday.
MIL easily spends $200+, and gives LO a new gift every time we see her....which is weekly.

$0 to $100-200ish. Sometimes they don't remember or acknowledge birthdays.

My parents spend between $50-$100. IL's probably spent $75-$80 on her gifts this year but then gave her a check for $200( or maybe $250) that goes into her savings account. They do the check for Christmas too.

@SweetiePie: I feel your pain. Christmases at my IL is overwhelming. Literally 100+ gifts for 10 people. I'm going to ask them to do want, need, wear, read for Christmas & birthdays.
My parents give us a check for our birthdays and Christmas. They will do the same thing for the babe we will put it in her bank acct.

@SweetiePie: we have a similar situation with my ILs. Christmas this past year (when LO was not even four months old!) was insane and overwhelming. I know it comes from a good place, but it's going to get tricky to handle when LO is a little older.

WAY too much I think. I voted over $200. They definitely spend more on my kids at bdays/Christmas than I do. Its sort of ridiculous and I feel bad but they get so much I feel like they don't need a ton of stuff from us as well! My parents buy them tons of clothes, etc. My IL's buy more toys/"fun" gifts. My kids are going to be spoiled, seriously.

My ILs are usually in the ballpark of $75 - $100 and my mom gives a $100 red envelope.
man you guys have some very generous and/or parents/ILs!!!
@aprild: my ILs ask but then never buy off the suggestions we give. It's kinda annoying. I even have a Amazon wish list for her so there's no guessing involved.

My parents bought DS about $100 worth of gifts and then gave a $$ gift, I think for his savings account. So maybe $200-$250 total?
My IL's spent maybe around $50-$100 I think.

My parents spend a lot - they're very generous and like to spoil (which I really don't mind b/c they love doing it. My MIL spends way, way less - prob under $50 for each holiday while my parents easily go into the hundreds. Not counting the envelopes of cash they give me for her bank account - which would put it in the $1,000's. But like I said, they're very generous I would hope to do the same for my children/grandchildren.
