The girls are really into certain characters, which I'm perfectly ok with...the thing is, I don't want all of their Christmas gifts to be character related, because they grow out of them. I am curious how much you give into character toys. I don't want to be a "mean mom" and not get them the things they really want, but I think I need to make it make sense for us. DH always said as a kid he NEVER got what he asked for, his parents always got him what they wanted, not what he wanted and I don't want my kids to feel that way either.

I'm like u. I think the compromise is buy one or two of what they really want and the rest what u want lol.

I buy open ended character toys, for the most part..like Barbie dolls (they can still use these later), or action figure/cars (like paw patrol sets), etc. Even if they outgrow the character I feel like they can still use them.

I buy DD what she wants. I always got what I wanted so maybe that's why? I figure when she outgrows it we can sell it or donate.

I buy my children what they want, within reason. The toys are for them, not me.

They don't bother me at all. I would rather buy all the character toys and not the clothes.

We have quite a bit, but I'll confess total obsession weirds me out and when someone got DD some Frozen themed accessories, I spent some time de-Frozening them. She's only one. I'll get the kids something if they really want it, but would love to put off dealing with this till they're at a somewhat rational age.

I buy what they want since that's what they'll use. They're going to outgrow all toys at some point anyways, so we just donate when that happens.

I never fought it, I figured if it isn't one thing, it is another. I also figured that it's a short period of time that I would have to deal with it, so that kind of tempered me.

We buy whatever character sets he wants. They're his toys!

I really dislike character stuff. I try to avoid it, and my son gets very little exposure to it. Not sure what will happen as he gets older and more aware of it. At 2.5 I still get to control a lot of what crosses his path, but I know that won't last forever.
We do not watch TV at all (except occasionally when he is asleep, plus the Olympics. Avoiding commercials probably helps too.

We don't fight it. It's super cute to see him all excited to get things he's really into. Plus a lot of things he can still play with - he has a Thomas tent that he still uses even though he's more into Paw Patrol these days.
And speaking of, I try not to get him too many toys in general (we requested no gifts for his recent birthday party though he still got from family) so I asked my husband not to get him a bunch of Paw Patrol figurines. He got him a Paw Patrol coloring book instead which I liked because it's smaller and seemed less wasteful somehow.

@Smurfette: Same. I couldn't care less about character toys, but character clothing makes me cringe. The only character clothing they wear are old stuff that was mine/my husband's and it's for nostalgia.

@littlebug: I have bought a couple shirts that don't scream character to me. But then our neighbor gave us a bunch as hand me downs. Of course she loves them. But I keep them for days when we aren't leaving the house and day care spare outfit. PJ's I could care less about. All her nightgowns, except one, are princess related.

As a general rule, I try not to buy the toys. If there's something they desperately want, I'm ok if someone else gets it as a present for them. Really all they have are a few frozen-themed puzzles, and an Elsa/Anna doll set. They've mostly lost interest in the dolls, but the puzzles are a hit - more because they love puzzles than anything else though.
I definitely don't buy character clothes. The girls have some socks/undies that were bought by relatives - I try to leave them at school as extras, but of course the kids love them.

@Smurfette: Yep. I do character pjs. And my MIL buys character stuff which becomes their extra daycare clothes.

Why not do a combination of both types of toys? One or two character things and one or two toys you think will have more longevity that you pick.
But idk about anyone else, but I never have luck picking out things I think he'll love. He's end up being meh about it and loves stuff I never would've guessed.

I mean don't get me wrong, our house is exploding with all things character...I think that's the issue, too much.

We have a mix. I usually prefer a character toy over a character clothing item, unless it's pjs.
