I think I'm right around $27K. I haven't looked at the balance recently because, honestly, it just makes me sick. I feel like I'll be paying it off for the rest of my life. Luckily, I'm the only one in the house with loans, though, so we only have mine to worry about.

mine are paid off, so i voted with what we owe on DH's. eventually i'll have to go back, so i'm not done with school & DH needs another degree, so he's not either. more loans are in our future =/

$7900 to go. I've been out of school 6 years, should be long gone, only now I am finally putting $500-$1000/month on it to get it GONE. Sick of it hanging over my head.

My goal is to have it gone by time LO goes to daycare after mat leave (Oct 2013) and loan payments become daycare payments, lol.

3 years of PT school at an expensive university has put me over $100,000. Ridiculous considering what PTs make. In hindsight I should've gone to the cheap state school.

I had $122k until three months ago when we decided to take some of our down payment savings to wipe out my student loan debt. It will delay our house hunt for a bit but not making those payments feels soooooo good.

Over 100k I start paying them back this month :((

I didn't have loans and we paid DH's off last year, so it's really nice! Now we're trying to build up a 20% down payment + some other savings. We're kind of in a weird place--no debt whatsoever, but we rent, don't make very much and don't own anything except for 1 fairly new car and 1 beater.

We didn't have loans. We lived at home through university and my mom had a fund for me for tuition, and so did DHs parents.
Very, very fortunate.

Way way WAY too much. They just came due last month & I had to call & see if I qualified for interest-free payments and/or affordable payments because there's just no way I can pay back what they set out as their monthly amount.

I graduated with $11k. We recently paid mine off. DH still has about $75k. If we pay the recommended amount, they'll be paid off when we're 55! We're throwing every extra bit of money at them, but we're also trying to save for a house. It's tough to prioritize.

@MrsBrewer: yeah, i lucked out with graduation timing/consolidation there. The crazy thing is i'd rather pay off our vehicle loan first than rush to pay the student loans.

I just checked the loan statement and i was wrong...i owe more like $6600.

...a depressing amount. I don't like to share my #, but I did vote.

I'm only 24 so I don't beat myself up about it too much. Ask me this question when I'm 34 and I'll feel a lot more confident about answering because by then a large amount will be paid down (I'm on a 25-year repayment plan). We throw any and all extra $ we get against my loans and it still feels like we're not making a dent).

I just feel lucky enough that I have a decent paying career and am able to make my payments!

@MrsBrewer: student loans was luck in graduating - in late 2004 the credit market hadn't tanked yet so I could consolidate. And our car loan is through our credit union.

@dagret: Jealous. I was in college from 2006-2010. So, halfway through my college career the economy tanked and my private student loan lender JACKED up the interest rates. Since that's how I was funding a large part of my education, and I had to finish my education, I was stuck paying. In retrospect I could have "shopped around" a bit for a better rate, but hindsight is 20/20.

And now no one will consolidate my loans. Grrrr....

@doxielove: @MrsBrewer: It was TOTAL luck. And private lenders suck. If i had mine through private lenders I'd be much more proactive in getting rid of my loans. Hang in there!

The only negative about my consolidation loan is that any "extra" goes towards "future payments," not principle.

We are very lucky to have 0 debt. My parents paid for my BA and I didn't continue for a master's because I didn't think it was worth it in my field and I knew that would mean taking on debt. DH did his schooling in France where it is much cheaper, his private business school cost about 5k a year. His parents paid for his mba. So we have no debt, but we also have no assets, we'll probably buy a car and eventually a home once we move to the US in 2013.
