Whites, darks,lights, dry clean.

Eta: my husband's dress shirts are also done in a load of their own, as are sheets.

I do lights, whites, darks, and jeans. Makes for a lot of loads

None! It all goes in together & gets washed on cold. Makes my life so much easier, and I've never had a stain problem.

The white towels, curtains, and bed linens get a bleach cycle every once in a while.

Hot washes (towels, underwear, and sheets), and then darks, lights, and delicates. DH usually covers his own laundry and the towel loads and I do the other three.

Lights and darks. We have rusty water so to try and get whites white seems like a losing battle

Lights, darks, mediums, towels, and sheets/blankets. Oh, and a separate load for Farmer Man's incredibly filthy (think grease and other grime) work clothes. I have a laundry sorting station set up in my laundry room with a basket labeled for each load and when the basket is full, the load gets washed.

I'm so lazy. I do white / non-whites / things that need to hang dry. Oh and separate for cloth diapers and kitchen/cleaning rags I guess.

The majority of my laundry sorting is goes in the dryer/doesn't go in the dryer. I hate sorting through a drum of wet laundry trying to make sure I've picked out all the hang dry stuff. Everything gets washed on the "cool" setting of the washer (just warm enough for the enzymes in the detergent to work most effectively).

There are a few particular garments that get special treatment because they run like crazy and can't be trusted with white/light colors.

I also run bedding and towels on a hot + bleach cycle any time enough things happen to pile up at once to make it practical; the rest of the time they just go in on cool as part of a mixed load.

@photojane: Um, same here. I (usually) wash E's clothes and diapers separately from ours (but in a load together), and it's not unusual for me to throw some of his clothes in with ours. So lazy.

I separate it as: my laundry, his laundry, baby laundry, bath towels and nasty kitchen towels. Everything on cold, everything with Tide.

Used to do whites, darks, reds/pinks, and blues/greens, because DH has a TON of t-shirts. Now that time is of the essence, its more like "What do I need washed desperately before I run out of clothes?"

Honestly I don't separate at all our washer can fit all the clothes DH and I wear in a week with room to spare (love our high capacity washer) but once we have kids it will probably change

But I've thrown darks and lights together on cold before if I don't have enough for separate loads and I haven't had a problem with color bleeds.

if there is enough for an only towel-load, then i do this. sometimes i top it off with socks and underwear and things that i don't care if they are in the dryer for as long as towels. everything else i lump together and do a cold water wash, with some items hang to dry.

I guess we do a lot of separation, but everything has a different hamper. I dont have to sort. I just grab whatever is full and wash it. Technically I could do DD's clothes with ours since I only use one detergent, but it's easier to have a hamper in her room where we change her.

Lights, darks, towels, sheets, kitchen, dog towels (we live in a muddy subdivision under construction with a golden retriever, lol), kid clothes, diapers! Thankfully most of these loads are once a week or less (diapers aside) and we have an XL capacity washer and dryer!

I separate an amount. Usually something like this:

Jeans, dark/blacks, blues/greens, reds/pinks, greys, very whites. towels and linens.

I have a fear of colour bleeding... this will probably all change when we have children and I don't have the time or energy.

It depends. Most of the time I'm pretty lazy so most of our clothes just get thrown in together. I do separate loads for sheets and blankets, towels, kitchen towels/napkins, and cloth diapers. If I'm being more careful I will do separate washes for whites, darks, and then one for everything else.
