I know this is a lot of talking to myself. I found another person for 350 for a one hour session and 40+ hi-res pictures on a CD. I have no idea why I was finding such high quotes earlier today.
If anyone in the bay area wants some recs let me know. This has consumed me all day.

Yeowch! Expensive! We paid a friend with a fancy camera $50 and got some killer shots.

@meganmp: So nice your friend for taking pictures of you and for you paying 50 dollars!!
UPDATE!! Just booked someone for 350 and we get all the pictures he takes during the one-hour session! Woot Woot. He is sending me the contract soon. I really like him because if you can't tell I'm overly detailed sometimes and he read everything I wrote to him and answered in detailed too.

This is the photographer that we used when she used to live in southern CA and she has since relocated to northern CA: https://m.facebook.com/cassiebrabecphotography?_rdr. I wish she was still down here. I'd work with her again in a heartbeat.

@ChelseaRose: Thanks for the suggestion but I just booked the photographer.
Thank you everyone for the help!

@Raindrop: Glad you found someone! FWIW, I started inquiring a couple of days ago a. Session Fees were average $150-250 and all the CD images of a select number of digital files all started around $375-400 STARTING. Yikes! I am still on the hunt and need to find a rec someone here posted before... Our photog last year was just starting out, so sweet and awesome and reasonable. Of course, now she moved.

@shopaholic: OMG that was sooo the beginning of my day today. All the prices I was quoted earlier were crazy! Then I found more reasonable prices. Definitely from people here. The guy I finally booked was on yelp but on his website he had no pricing info but when I contacted him, he gave me very reasonable prices!
Where do you live?

@scg00387: We just did newborn photos for $350, which included 2 photographers coming to our house and doing the shoot for over 3+ hours. They edited the photos and sent them to us electronically via Dropbox so we could just order all the prints we wanted.
Their regular family sessions are $300 and I think those are about 2 hours and its the same thing - images via Dropbox. Since they specialize in newborn photography, they have a lot of patience for little ones.
That said, they weren't as good as, say, our wedding photographer, but considering we spent like 10x more for that, I think they did a marvelous job for the price.
We live in Northern California where prices for things are somewhat higher, so I definitely think you can find a photographer for less than $900.

@Raindrop: we live in SoCal. I have seen better deals (and in discussion to join one) when I follow favorite photographers and they offer "Mini Sessions".

@Raindrop: Mini sessions are great for 1 kid, but we found it's impossible to get good pics of 2 kids ( if one is an infant or toddler)in the mini session time (in my area that is typically 25 mins). $500 is what you have to budget in my area for a sitting fee and either a cd or a no cd but a decent amount of prints.

Ours are being done my a coworker of mine who has a side business. It will be $150 for an hour and that includes a CD good enough for 4x6 and web and rights to print. Enlargements will be an additional charge. We could NEVER afford $1k for photos and I wouldn't want to spend money on that.

We just did a family portrait with 6 people plus a dog. For $250, we got a 1-2 hour shoot (I think she was there 90 mins) plus a CD of 25-35 edited images. I was concerned with getting all the images as I felt that would be plenty of images! It took awhile to find someone we liked and in our price range. One guy wanted a $125 sitting fee plus another $300 for a CD with the pictures, no thank you! You could also check groupon or living social. I've done deals before for a shoot plus a CD with edited pictures and was happy with the quality.

@raindrop: I have a friend who is a photographer in San Jose/Santa Cruz... I don't think he routinely shoots families, but he is a newer photographer expanding his portfolio...he might be willing to do it very reasonably.

ETA: Oops! I see you found someone! Never mind!

@Sparkler: Thank you! I thought 500 was a reasonable price to shoot for our area. I didn't expect prices to be so drastically different. It's tough being in a pricey area!
@bpcmarj: Nice! 1k is a lot for us too, we could manage it because we actually don't spend a lot normally but it would dip into our savings and we would of course tighten our belts for however long to make up that money in savings.
@alphagam84: That's a good idea! I wish I wasn't in such a time constraint but at the same time I'm glad I am. When it was just planning for us, I have been dragging my feet and saying... we can just wait to get pictures. But now since we have to do it while my husband parents are in the area... really got on the ball. Definitely if this goes well we might make it a more common thing and I will look out for deals and keep my eyes peeled on groupon and livingsocial.
@78h2o: Thank you so much for the suggestion! That was very kind of you! But yeah we found someone! Hehe. Your friend looks awesome though.
