Woah! Are these all American prices? We just talked to a friend this morning about this and he paid $1400 for personal and $4000 for business!!!

I was trying to remember this morning, it's either $125 or $180 by a CPA. I thought we were paying a high amount, but I guess not.

@avivoca: Omg I had no idea H&R charged so much. I thought it was cheap but apparently not!

We did our own taxes for many years and paid $25-50 for Turbo Tax (depending on how late we were filing). It's not that hard and I would still do it myself but we have a bunch of weird situations this year that made me just want to get an accountant.

Based on everyone's responses I guess $380 isn't so bad!

@sunny: H&R is really cheap until you buy a house or have kids.

@sunny: We paid $125 to H&R block, however we know the accountant so she gave us a deal due to some issues we had 2 years ago. She's been workign on getting some money the IRS owed us from a bad return down by someone else and not filing correctly.

$400 with a CPA. It's totally worth the money as we always owe less than if we used software.

We spend about $2000 for personal and business. We know we pay a lot but we went with a very well respected firm our church uses for their bookkeeping. They are extremely thorough. In fact our CPA spends about 20 hours preparing our 50-70 page return and runs a lot of calculations and scenarios for us (that we request) to minimize tax liability and maximize our retirement contributions. We also get about an hour of financial planning with the lead accountant once a year so I guess it's not just taxes. So it's very expensive but well worth it to us.

$40 by a CPA, but she's a family friend of ours who's been doing my taxes since my dinky high school jobs so I know we're getting a deal. It may go up a bit next year with little one on there, and again when I become a partner/self-employed, but it's worth it.

FIL is also a CPA, but I'm not comfortable at all with the ILs having our full financial information, so we're happy to pay the $40 to our CPA.

@kjpugs: I honestly don't know. My DH dealt with it last year.

Ours charged $350 last year which was the first year we haven't done it ourselves.

$600 but my taxes are somewhat complicated because I technically have two small businesses with work at home deductions and lots of other deductions for various other stuff. Also she prepares all my estimated tax payments for me and is on-call throughout the year for advice on tax issues.
