My cats each get a 1/4 cup of dry in the am and they split a small can at night. They eat high quality food though and since there's no fillers they eat less than a typical side of the bag would recommend.

@spaniellove: hehe she used to get 2 cups but in her old age she was putting on weight so our vet told us to scale back.

@locavore_mama: OMG if I had to feed her less than 1/4 cup a meal she'd be eating crumbs!

Dog - corgi - 27lbs and he gets 3/4 cup dry food twice/day (used to be 1/2 cup but he got more active when we moved so we had to up it).
Cats- 2 of them, 12lb and 7lb. We were feeding them a total of 1 cup/day (split into two feedings) dry food, but they went on a dry food strike and we had to switch to wet. We're still trying to figure out the right amount to feed them with that. We started with 2 3-oz cans + 1/2 cup dry food per day (split into two feedings) which they're eating but not gaining back the weight they lost from the hunger strike. Then we tried 4 cans/day with no wet food and they don't finish it. So now we're trying 3 cans/day with 1/4 cup dry food and they'll actually eat most of that... so we're seeing if that gets their weights back to where they should be.

Our 11lb yorkie has food out all day. She only will nibble when she is hungry!

We just keep food in her bowl at all times but we fill it maybe every other day...maybe a little longer. She doesn't over eat.

Our yorkies eat about 1/2 cup of dry food or dehydrated food daily. Our golden eats like 3 cups of dry food.

@hotchildinthecity: yeah, I've found that i need to feed less if it's higher quality food. They tend to poop less, too!

Our dogs get a cup and a half twice a day. The cats free feed dry food and they share a half a can of wet food about every other day.

Our dog is 80 lbs and gets 3 cups a day. Our little dog is 4 lbs and gets a few handfuls. We just always leave some in her dish so I'm not sure how much she actually eats. A small bag lasts months though!

@mrs bunchy: my 15 lb dachshund too. Her bowl usually needs to be filled once every 3 or 4 days...we are bad & give her table scraps too.

@pinkcupcake: thats the reason we switched!! When we first got liza we fed her friskies and her poop smelled SO bad. Now we feed them both high quality/organic and people say they dont know we have cats!

@Mae: you probably already are doing it but high quality food makes a big difference!

@hotchildinthecity: Yep, we're on it! That's honestly sort of the problem. Our cat got sick about 2 years ago and lost a lot of weight and since then we've been very careful to feed the cats high quality food. But they prefer the shit. lol. We've had to switch a few times because we've just never found anything they like as much as they like cheap food. And they'll be okay with something for a few months... then suddenly refuse to eat it anymore. Stubborn! hah

@Mae: talk to @blackbird !! I've gotten on my soapbox to her and she has the same exact problem

My cat has a small bowl (about the size of a cup measurement) which we fill each night before bed. She self-regulates, and probably eats about 1/3 - 1/2 of it in a 24 hours period. She's ten years old!

@Mae: @hotchildinthecity: idk how true it is, but I heard lower quality dog foods spray chemicals on their kibble to make it more enticing/tasty. I bet they do that w/ cat food ,
Too, and that's why they prefer the shit food over the good stuff :T

@pinkcupcake: I just assumed it was like switching them from pizza and wings to grilled chicken and broccoli.

@Mae: lol. Never thought about it like that but I think you're right

We normally feed our 70 lb dog 2 cups twice a day but we pretty much free feed. Somedays she will only eat 1 cup all day, other days she'll eat all four cups and we'll give her an extra cup and she'll eat that too! But she's a healthy weight for her frame, so we just go with it! I wish I could self-regulate like she does!!

I have an almost 3 year old Boxer, she eats 4 cups of high calorie dog food a day, plus lots of peanut butter and she's a skinny-minnie!

As much as they want, they're still kittens & growing at a totally unreasonable rate, ummm... >9oz each last wk alone! They are going to be enormous cats when they are full grown!

My dog is 4 years old and 18 lbs. She get 1/3 cup of dry food in the morning and 1/3 cup in the evening.
We free feed our cat. We keep her food behind a baby gate so the dog won't eat it.

Our lab is 8 years old and 65 lbs. She gets one scoop out of a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co cup once a day. I have no idea what that amount is. We give her two scoops the days she hunts. She also gets table scraps regularly.

Penny is 8.5 & 20-22 lbs and we probably give 1/2 cup twice a day.
