I'm just curious to see if energy bills vary much across the country/countries. Please share your source of energy and your bill amount from last month.

Last month's bill: electric-$350. Oil- $100
It's been a hot summer and I'm home on maternity leave, so the A/C has been on continuously.

Our gas bill is around $25 in the summer and our electric bill is around $60. We have central air (although it just broke yesterday) but only run it when we need it. In the winter gas is more $100ish because of heat. We live in Michigan.

That's with a pool, and 2 adults/1 baby home all day. In the fall and spring, we pay about $70 a month, and about $100 in the winter.

Last month's bill: Our electric bill is around $70 in the Spring/Summer and goes up to about $125 in the winter. We go through about 1.5 oil tanks a year which is about $600 nowadays because oil prices have gone down so much.
We run an a/c unit in our downstairs all day and one in my daughter's room at night. We have a hybrid hot water heater that I think saves us a lot of money on electricity in the summer.

Hydro: $230 ish (our air conditioner uses this)
Gas: equal billing around $80. But it's our first year in the house and it's heated by gas fireplace. So we will see in sept if we owe more or they owe us.

Maine. We have propane heat.
Electric is $80 low in the winter to about $200/month if I even so much as look at the AC (we don't run it often)
Heat: lol, about $500- $600/month September through April. About $100/month remaining months. I keep my house at 64 during the day, never more than 68 when we are home.

@yoursilverlining: what kind of heat do you have and how big is your house?? I ask because we are moving from a small condo with gas heat to a big house with oil and we are pretty nervous about how much it's going to cost to heat it. We got the previous owners average costs and we are really hoping to keep it a lot lower than they were spending, but I'm also home with little kids all day...

CT - average about $80/month in electric (includes hot water), goes up to about $00 during Christmas. We have oil heat and keep our house pretty cold (like 62) and spent about $1200 last year.

We don't have gas just electric, central AC . We run the AC non stop most of the year and it is 125 a month. We have the bill on a flex pay so it is the same every month. Before we did that it was low in the winter at $60 and high in the summer at $225+. We live in south FL, small house.

We primarily heat our house by burning wood, which we spend $1K on every couple years OR cut for free off our property

@Foodnerd81: we have propane heat. I was adamant not to buy a home with oil heat but didn't realize that propane burns lower so you use more of it! Oy! We went from a condo with natural gas which was about $125 a month for heat (maybe $200/month in winter) that was 1300 square feet to our home which is a little over 2600 square feet. It's a newish (2012) energy efficient home too. It literally boggles my mind each month, but everything is propane (heat, hw and cooking)

@yoursilverlining: ugh. I'd better buy more fleece pjs for everyone. We will have electric for cooking but I assume oil for hot water. They actually have gas lines up to our street but not down it, DH called to see how much it would cost to have the gas extended to our cup de sac- $10,000. Or something insane. So, oil it is.
Eta: oh and the windows are all old and single paned and need to be replaced, but we will probably do it in the spring. Gonna be a tough winter.

Can vary a lot by location. We pay 60-150 for electric in a 3000 sq foot townhouse in the South. When we lived in NYC, we paid 150-350 for electric for our 950 sq foot condo. Yep.

We pay 30-120 for electric - a couple of our rooms are heated by electric so it's 120 then. Right now it's about 50 bc of the window AC.
Gas is for cooking, hot water, most heat - can go from about 20-140. Right now it's in the 20-30 range.
So we're about 80 total in these months, which isn't too bad in a just over 2000 sq ft

Our monthly bill has been about $130. We have hard woods, no fireplace and our house is in direct sun all day so there is this strange time of year when we need the heat in the morning (especially for little toes) and A/C in the afternoon and it's closer to $180 usually two-ish months out of the year.

Everything in my house is electric (2500 sq ft.), and we're also running a work shop off our pole, the bill runs 150-300, depending on the time of year. I'm actually signed up with a company who finds me the best rates and switches my providers every time my contract is up, so usually I'm with a new light company every 6 months. In Texas there is a million electric providers lol.

@petitenoisette: holy cow! we are doing something very wrong apparently! we're in MA, oil heat, and hybrid water heater, and our electric is ...winter $150, spring/fall $225, and last month was $300!!

Last month'so bill: electric was $85 - we have 2 central air units but only use the one upstairs for sleeping. In spring/fall when we are not using heat or ac it is about $65 and in winter $100-120. Our natural gas bill is balanced so we pay about $130/month year round but we just had our yearly true up so the bill was only $40.

The numbers are also hugely affected by the size of the space. So that's a big factor. Our A/C is electric and our heat and hot water are gas. Most months its about $300 for all utilities (obviously it switches which one is the bigger cost depending on the season). We live in TN and our home is about 4,500 sft

Heating/hot water: Furnace is gas, hot water is electric. Our AC reverse-cycles in the winter and will heat the house up to I think 60° before the furnace kicks in.
Last month's bill: electric-$140. I believe we contract $700/year for gas. Electric doesn't vary too much throughout the year.
Our home is around 2000 sf.

@PurplePumps: Well I should have added a disclaimer that our house is pretty small and we also put in $7k of insulation last Spring that has helped a ton with our energy bills. Check out Mass Save if you know your house isn't well insulated.

We pay £103 per month for gas and electricity combined. We don't have air-con and have a brand new, energy efficient boiler ro run our central heating. We are in the UK.

Electricity: city-owned power company (mandatory, we don't have the option to choose utility providers)
Heat: oil
Bills: our electricity is billed every other month and is usually around $175, so about $85-90/month. We don't have central AC, just a portable unit that we only run when really necessary. Our dehumidifier runs pretty much 24/7 and constitutes a good 1/4 of our power consumption, but unfortunately we have to do it or the basement gets really smelly. Oil usually gets topped off twice a year and runs $450-600 each time, depending on how cold it has been. We keep our house about 67-68 in the winter and it's about 2500 sq ft.
@Foodnerd81: We looked into getting a gas line and have the same issue as you, there's a line on the cross street but not down the street to our house. If we were to split the cost with our neighbor, it would be $7-8k each to run the main line, plus whatever the actual hookup costs are for our own house and we'd have to buy a new heater, clothes dryer, and stove (the gas company requires at least 3 appliances on gas to hook you up). Neighbor isn't interested so it's not even a question because we'd never recoup the cost. We're considering a ductless mini-split system but we'll have to upgrade our electrical service and panel to do that, so right now we're just sticking with what we've got. Isn't homeownership fun?

We're in the Seattle suburbs. We have gas and electric.
This is the first summer we have central AC and our bill is about $120/month. It's worth the extra expense!
During the winter months our bill probably averages $250/month. I stay home and I like a warm house.
There are some months where the bill is only $50/month (spring and fall)

@Jackiedavis87: yes! I feel wasteful almost using heat and a/c in the same day but sometimes it just feels impossible not to!
