DH was off for 6 weeks with DS1.
This time, he will have a week off, then half a week back, another week off, etc. for 1.5 months. Because of his position, he has to stagger his time off and can't be off for an extended period of time!

He can take up to 6 weeks. He took 4 for LO 1 and 5 for LO 2. We are playing it by ear this time.

He can take 6 weeks. I think he is going to take 2 in the beginning and then a couple more later on.

No time off once we were discharged from the hospital with LO1. This time he is planning on taking 1 week once we're home then 1 day a week for the next couple weeks.
pomelo / 5258 posts
6 weeks with LO1 and he plans to take 2 weeks when LO2 arrives in a week or so. He may take another month after my leave is over but I don't think he wants to.

He didn't have paternity leave. He took a weeks vacation for the first but it was more like 10 days. For the second he took 0 time off. He had just started a new job and it wasn't really an option. It sucked.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
He gets 3 paid days, and then can use his own time if he wants. He only took the 3 days with E (which butted onto a weekend) but this time he'll take more...especially since LO2 is due on Christmas Eve.

Holy crap, 6 weeks, 12 weeks?? Amazing. DH doesn't get actual paternity leave, and could only afford to use up 5 sick/vacation days.

All men can take 12 weeks unpaid if they qualify for FMLA...
DH and I have talked about him taking 2 weeks after the birth, and then 6-8 weeks to bridge the gap between my FMLA and our summer breaks (we are both teachers). Only those first two weeks would be paid by using sick time (you can use sick time to care for a family member.) He could use more sick days, if he had them.

@ineebee: I should've phrased it better. DH has 1 week paternity leave paid by his company, 4 weeks saved PTO, and DS was a thanksgiving time baby so the rest was staggered over holidays and then an extra paid bonus week that his boss happen to give him at the time!

DH doesn't qualify for paternity leave so he'll be using a week of vacation right away and another in August (we're all going away then). He can't even use his sick time for birth or anything.

DS he was off 1 or 2 weeks (I don't remember...when he went back to work my mom took off week, so I think I am blurring the two together).
DD he was off a few days before my induction through the new year, so about 6 weeks. He could have taken up to 12 but not all would have been paid. I think paid paternity leave was only 1-2 weeks, but he used sick, holiday and vacation time to have the full 6 weeks he was off paid.
He now works for a different company and I don't think they offer paternity leave. He also recently started and I think his vacation was prorated for the year, so he doesn't have as much as he normally would. I think he will only be able to take a week off tops. 6 weeks would have been nice since we will have 3 kids under 4.5 and I have to go back to school for 1.5 weeks a week after baby is born. My mom will probably take off a week or two off again as well once he goes back to work.

he took of the Thurday (delivery day) and friday, then Monday-Wed. I'm still bitter about it. He could have taken more time up to 2 weeks over the course of the 3 months I was home but he chose to carry those day into the next year.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
No paid leave, but he used his PTO.
4 weeks for #1 (then he worked from home 2 days/week for 4 weeks)
5 weeks for #2

He took 2 weeks off, then was back for a week, then had another week off when his mom came to visit us/meet LO. He had initially asked to take 4 weeks off because he had more than enough vacation time saved (he only gets 2 paternity days) but he was told that he couldn't take more than 2 weeks at a time unless there was extenuating circumstances, like LO or I still being in the hospital or something. It sucked because I got induced on a monday morning and had LO on a tuesday via c section which means I didn't gt discharged until Friday. So he wasted an entire week's leave in the hospital! And when he went back to work I was still not able to do stairs more than once/day. I ended up asking my mom to come stay for the week between when he was at work because I didn't feel like I could safely care for LO on my own (I was having complications from my c section which complicated things...)

With #1 DH got a week paternity leave and took a week vacation for a total of two weeks.
His company has a new policy and he can take up to 6 weeks this time, but it's not fully paid and he would have to cover all his insurance costs (which his company usually pays). He plans on taking three weeks off.

Paternity leave? Lolololol. DH took a week of sick leave. He has to save it for the winter when we all inevitably get sick. I actually found that I didn't need any help past a week, anyways, so it wasn't a big deal
pomelo / 5678 posts
None, he took a couple days. If we have another hopefully two weeks! That's vacation days.

One day with DD1, but a week with DD2! He just took vacation time. His company doesn't have paternity leave.

1 week actual paternity leave with DH's company. Last time, he took an additional 1 week vacation. This time, we aren't sure yet.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
He took 2 weeks off with DD, and 1 week off with DS. Both times he had to use his banked PTO. No real paternity leave policies at his company.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
He isn't technically taking any time off but since he's a teacher and our LO is coming early July, he will have about 6 weeks PTO.

2 weeks with #1
4 weeks with #2
He was eligible for 100% paid for 6 weeks with both but with our first we didn't know that so he used vacation, and with our second he didn't want to take the full 6 since it decreases how long I am off (our leave is shared here for a total of 52 weeks).
apricot / 305 posts
He had 2 weeks of paternity leave with LO1. He's switched companies since then though, so I'm not sure what he'll have for LO2. If he has to use his vacation time though, he will probably just take a couple of days off since he only has about 2 weeks of vacation leave per year.
nectarine / 2641 posts
About 1.5 weeks with LO1.
Unfortunately, he just started a new job and doesn't qualify for PTO yet, so 0 days with #2. He'll probably have to have his laptop at the hospital...
cherry / 178 posts
DH will only have 2 weeks, unless he uses his vacation time on top if it or does FMLA unpaid. We are considering him doing his 2 weeks paid, then 2 weeks unpaid that way he still has his vacation time to use. I'm taking a year so it would be nice to have him home sometimes too

10 days with LO1
1 month with LO2
He took a few vacation days too.

My husband used FMLA with our two sher used all his leave and stayed home for six weeks to help take care of our 8 month old while. Cared for the twins. With my daughter he took one week went back for a week while my mom took a week off then took the following week off. So it was 2 total but not consecutive.

My husband was able to get 3 weeks off unpaid. I am so excited he was able to get so much time off.
persimmon / 1304 posts
He took off for a week after DD was born. We need to figure out what he will do for baby on the way! Hoping he gets some kind of parental leave benefit instead of having to take straight PTO!
persimmon / 1161 posts
For those with husbands who "couldn't" take leave, were they just not eligible for fmla (small business, not there long enough, etc.) or was this a financial decision?
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
For dd he was flexible and working from home so it was great.
With this one he will use 2 weeks vacation but have to keep up with work (emails, calls, etc) during those weeks. It's a bummer but oh well
persimmon / 1379 posts
2 weeks with our older daughter, and while he would have qualified for 2 weeks with our younger, he was really busy at work and went back after a week.
