Usually about £50, more if it's family or a really close friend or less if we're an evening guest only or they're more of an acquaintance.

ETA: we got married last year and the average gift was around £30-50.

On my own (single) I have spent $50-75 on a gift, but those weddings all required travel- significant gas money, plane ticket and hotel.

DH and I have a local wedding to attend this year and we will guft off the registry I just don't know how much yet.

$100 per guest (so $200 if DH comes with me). If its a good friend then $300 for DH and I.

@Bao: hmm..are they similar enought o another couple? I know that sounds weird. but like one group of friends all generally gifted us $50 (per couple).

I also try to gift what someone gifted us at our wedding. And it all really depends on what we can afford at the time. Usually we'll give $100 though, that's the average amount that friends gave us.

luckily, we were the first of our friends to get married (and first in our generation of family). so we just return what we received.

but the general rule of thumb i follow is $150 pp ($300) as a couple. BUT i think this must be the higher end cause most of our friends gave us $200 so we've noticed that we give back $200...

Similar to what everyone has said, I think it depends on the relationships. Do you know if they have a wedding registry?

My DH and I have gifted friends/co-workers $150 and anywhere between $200-$400 for close friends and families.

If most of your friends gave $50ish, just do that! If she didn't even send you a gift, I wouldn't worry about how much you give her.

Generally we give about $200 for friends, or match what they gave us.

I usually gift $100, no matter what kind of wedding or who it is. $50 sounds fine.

we average a $200 cash gift... if we want to spend less we try to buy a registry gift, something between $100-$150... VERY close friends get a little more.

I grew up in a small town and we had about 200 people at our wedding. I think close friends and family gave us $50 - $100. I don't think anyone besides my Grandparents and parents gave us more than $100. When my brother got married I gave them $100, although I also spend about $100 on SIL's bridal shower gift. If its a really close friend I would probably do $50. At least in my town if you gifted someone a large amount of money they would probably ask to make sure it wasn't a mistake.

ETA: I think I should have made friends wherever you guys are from prior to the wedding! HAHA! $300+ is seriously unheard of around here!

When we got married two years ago in FL, gifts ranged from $10 - $300.

I think $50-$100 is appropriate, anything lower than that seems cheapskate-ey, especially since it probably cost more than that per head for the catering and venue.

@bao- okay, I can see how that looks. hmm, I think sorrycharlie made a good point, base it off of your area.

I had semi-Vietnamese wedding (my DH is Vietnamese) and we mostly got monetary gifts from his side of the family and gift items from my side. Where I'm located, the minimum monetary gift is at $200 for the couple.

@regberadaisy: I have heard that "cover your plate" rule, but how do you know how much a person spent on their guest. I am happy I opted not to have an expensive wedding, but my price per guest would have been over $450. My fixed costs: venue $5,000 rental fee and $8,000 photographer were pricey.

@Bao: spend what you can afford and what you want to give based on relationship with the couple and keep in mind the additional costs associated with attending (travel, babysitters etc)

I'm in the midwest and we give 50 bucks. That's about average for a friend. We would give more for a family member though.
