We have only bought J toys at three separate times: Christmas, birthday and once when he was about 6-8 months old and outgrowing infant toys like the play gym. We've definitely spent less than $100 on toys over his 17-month life.
I feel he's starting to get bored with what he has though and I think we should invest in a few toys that he will love for many years...

Not very often. We've probably spent less than $200 on toys/puzzles/balls/bubbles for our dd and she's 28 months old.

Usually every few months but about 1-2 times a month during maternity leave. I love toys more than she does!

we didnt have a lot of toys for him in the beginning, so we went through a phase of buying him something weekly. he's got a sizeable stash now, but we're itching to buy more as we have a trip coming up and it's been a cpl months.

I buy her new things every now and then and have no qualms about buying new toys as long as they are good quality and will have a long life.

the first year -- too often! now maybe 2 christmas gifts, 1 birthday gift and when we travel. i don't think you need to buy toys as often once they're around 18 months. they play with the same things over and over....

3x. Christmas, birthday and once this summer. Which was through FB resale groups. I'm never buying toys full priced (NBD!) or new any more!

I haven't bought many - my parents seem to take care of that! 
But at 7.5 mo, today I just bought her some wooden activity toys at a consignment shop that I think she'll get some good use of.

We had a pretty strict no-buy policy for a long time because of the amount of hand-me-downs and gifts we got for Wagon Jr.! Then when LMW came along she just played with his old toys.
That being said, going toy shopping every now and then is a really fun thing for all of us Of course I would never buy anything full price, but we do splurge every now and then.

Almost never. I bought him a wooden toy on a whim a few months ago and he couldn't have cared less about it. His grandparents and aunts take care of sporadic toys.
However, I used to teach preschool and have a ridiculous amount of stuff in storage. So I pull out old puzzles or plastic food now and again to keep him interested. His current favorite is pom pom balls that he pushes through a hole I cut in a gift box.

I don't know if we have too many real toys yet at this age. Most things we have were gifted. I just bought her a Winkle and we've bought a couple of BlaBla dolls and Disney plush dolls. And stroller toys - she has a few of those. We already have gifted and hand-me down toys for when she's older. I'd rather not buy too many little toys, but I know DH won't be able to resist. He always wants to buy toys for all the little kids we know and loves to browse the toy aisles for ideas at Target!
