One time I heard that you should replace your entire spice rack every 6 months so that everything maintains flavor/freshness and I thought "pfft I'm not doing that. What a waste of money!"
Well, this weekend, I started to go through my spices to clear some out and replace a few and just about every single one of them had expired like 2 or 3 years ago! Gross! Maybe I need to find a happy medium and re-place/replenish every year or so.

Um... never. I have some that came with the spice rack, like, 5 years ago. But for the spices that I actually use a lot, I go through them fast enough that I'm not worried. The ones that came in the spice rack are in matching glass bottles, so no expiration date. I'm sure they just aren't as flavorful.

@Foodnerd81: There are a few that we go through so quickly I don't really have to worry about expiration dates, so that's good. It was time to go through them all either way though. I had like doubles and triples of some things - ack!

Never, because I cook so often that I always use everything up within a few months. Even the unusual spices.

If they are old enough to get all clumped together and not shakey anymore, they go in the trash and I'll buy it again when I need it again

i just bought little round labels to put on the spice bottles so i know when i bought them. otherwise i have no idea how old they are! it is such a waste to throw them out, but i can tell by looking at my old spices that they don't last forever!

Like 6 months or so. I hate when I go to use one and find it is expired. DH gets annoyed with me all the time cause I clean out the fridge all the time and throw stuff out cause it has expired. He thinks it is fine, um no.

I've had some spices for a couple years and they still look and taste fine. When their texture gets weird, I chuck them. But if they're in an airtight jar and rarely get used, I'm not concerned.

We also use them fast and don't replace. I might have some 6 year old Savory that I don't ever plan to use...or trash.

I toss according to the expiration dates. I don't think spices go bad right? They probably just lose all their flavor.

Rarely if ever! I use a lot of the common ones up, but some of the others, I just try and buy in the smallest container that I can

I cook a lot, so they're all either used and frequently replaced from bulk, or never touched. But the ones we use turn over quickly, because I never buy a ton in bulk.
