I have yet to master the "self cleaning oven" function in my oven... got to start doing that!
How often do you clean your oven? Do you scrub it by hand, or use the self-cleaning oven feature?

I need to but I don't know how the self cleaning thingy works on my oven.

It's been 2 years and I've never cleaned it. I've also only used it a maybe 10 times though so it doesnt get very dirty.

I always use the "self clean" feature. It works really well! I do it whenever it starts to look nasty, which has been 2-3 times since moving in (we have lived here about 18 months). We have old (1970s-era) appliances, so the timer function doesn't work, but I just let it go for 6-7 hours. it takes care of even the nastiest baked-on stuff! afterwards I will use a damp cloth to wipe up any remaining ash, and then maybe spray and wipe down with regular kitchen cleaner. It definitely beats scrubbing it with harsh chemicals any day!! Apart from the waiting around part, it only takes ~10 minutes to clean.

I use the self cleaning feature! There's nothing to it! Plus when you use that function (at least on our oven) no chemicals are needed! Basically it just turns your oven on to this highest temp, (500-600 degrees I think) and it just burns all the crud that's in your oven! I will warn you that it makes your house stink!
But once it's done, all you do is just wipe it out with a rag or paper towel, and all it is is like dust/powder. Then your oven looks like brand new! It will smoke a little, so I always try to get out as many big chunks as I can before I use the self clean feature. But it's soooo much better not having to scrub it by hand, and then you don't have to use any chemicals in your oven!

i've never done ours and it's been 3 years i hate sitting home feeling like the thing is burning while it self cleans, so i just don't do it, haha. it's not that dirty though. i've never had an oven that didn't have a self clean mode, so i've never had to scrub an oven. once it's dirty, i'll put it to self clean, but hopefully we'll move by then =P

I've used the self-clean feature once or twice before. It's pretty easy, you just lock it and leave it on clean to heat up for a few hours so it can incinerate everything. Are you not supposed to use any kind of oven cleaners in a self-cleaning oven? So I wouldn't do anything on my own other than wipe huge pieces with water.

We haven't cleaned ours yet because we have lived in different apartments for the past 3 years, so they are always clean when we move in. However, the house we are buying has a pretty dirty oven and I will definitely need to clean it.

Never cleaned it, we got it new in June 2011. Guess I've found something else for my husband's to do list!
