I used to all the time, DD1 is 15 months. She didn't need me back there anymore but I was reluctant to move up front because I knew my time was coming to an end. Now DD2 takes up my spot back there.

One time in DS's life. He's 19 months old. Never with DD who is 6 months old.

Once with my oldest on the day we brought him home. I was just so happy we were finally parents I couldn't stop holding his little hand. Plus it was a long drive from the hospital. After that I haven't sat in back.

Hmm now that I'm reading these replies and notice I am in the minority here. I always want to sit in the front but somehow felt obligated to sit in the back. DD1 doesn't need me back there and I try to leave DD2 alone when in the car since we usually time our trips to coincide with a nap. I think it's my own self guilt. We are in the car with both girls 1.5 hours a day roundtrip - drive to my parents, drop both girls off (daycare for DD1 opens after I have to be at work), park car, work, go to my parents (daycare closes before I get off work...), bath both girls, drive back home, bedtime. Basically Monday thru Thursday the only waking times we spend with both of them is in the car so I stay in the back so I can read books with DD1 and talk with her. That all might change once DD1 starts pre-3k this year but until then, I will likely stay in the back. I hate that our work days are so long but, luckily (I think), I only work M-Th.

I can count on one hand how many times I've done it since he's been born. So, very rarely.

So far almost never. DD is nearly 5 months and the only time I've sat next to her while DH drove was on our road trip to visit my family 6 hours away.

Never. Not even when we brought them home from the hospital!

@littleveesmommy: I think if I got that little time with LO in a day I would probably do the same

@littleveesmommy: I just think that's a really creative way to make it work

Never. My LO asks for me, but my husband likes me to sit up front with him.

A few times but just to hold a bottle while she drank.

I think maybe a couple times in her first weeks or so but after that, not at all.

Always - he HATED the car as a newborn and would cry and scream the entire time during a car trip, even if I was sitting back there with him. And he would always cry and scream when I had to drive solo during my maternity leave. Now at 6 months he's much better and is totally fine when no one is back there but I enjoy sitting with him when DH is driving.

Only those days when lo is really fussy and just needs a little company. Big road trips I sat back there as well. Overall it's a rare occurrence.

Never? I get extremely carsick. Like, I got a little sick reading the post, ha.
We did take turns sitting with her during the first month.
Our girl is 1 now, and hasn't really needed us back there with her yet. If we went on a road trip, my partner would probably pop back a few times. She's rear facing, will be for awhile, and imagine it could get kind of boring?

I did a lot when she was really teeny- hated the car seat, refused a paci but would suck in my pinky. After the first few months it became rare and now just about nonexistent. The most recent time was when she was just really hungry and we were getting home so late, so i sat back there and fed her to avoid a giant mess. She's 18 m now.

Commented earlier but came back to say that sometimes the dog sits up front with DH while I sit in back with LO. Pretty sure people who see us out & about (like our server yesterday at Sonic) must think we are crazy.

I rode with her just about every time up until she was about 10 months old, and since then (she's 19 months) I ride in front almost all the time.

So interesting, I thought you were supposed to sit back there with the baby!! I've been sitting in the back for the past 14 weeks (unless Im alone and driving). It makes me anxious when he's alone in the back cuz we fusses a lot in the car seat and we need to hold his paci in.

He still freaks out to be in the car seat. We make two round trips to take my step daughter to school and bring her home each day (and it seems like torture to him), so when DH and I are together in the car (mostly weekends only) I sit with him and read books.

Never. DH will sit with M while waiting for D at school, but since D is usually back there, it never happens.

Almost never. I briefly started doing it when he was around 6mos old and started to hate the car. It only worked a portion of the time, and then actually his ped recommended against setting the precedent.
He still does not love the car but had gotten better about it. We only drive on the weekends, and not every weekend. We try to time it so that he's likely to sleep during the trip.

Never, other than a handful of times in the first few weeks. It never occurred to me that this is something people do regularly, other than if your child has health issues. We talk to each other and she tells me what she sees outside and sings. She's fine back there.

A lot when LO (now 2) was a baby and HATED the car seat. DH and I thought it was safer for him to drive without all the screaming. Improved tremendously after we turned the car seat around at 18 months. Haven't sat in the back seat since.

I have never sat in the backseat with the kids. We've taken at least 6 8+ hour trips with the kids. My kids are 2 and 6 months.

Often, but usually to keep him awake rather than to keep him calm. We did have one particularly awful car trip at 6 months where we sat with him for stretches, and a 12-hour travel day where we probably sat with him for 1-2 hours total for entertainment.

Never, except for part of the time on long trips when they are extra fussy, in which I have been known to wedge myself between their two seats. Ouch!
grapefruit / 4823 posts
With DS, I did for the first few weeks and then only when he was really fussy. When DD came I only squeeze between them if she's super fussy, but that was barely a handful of times
grapefruit / 4663 posts
Never. I might sit back there for a minute if he's losing it but other Tgan that Nope. Even when we were nursing I didnt. The logistics of nursing in the car seat aren't particularly safe
coconut / 8472 posts
Pretty much never. I did it when we brought him home from the hospital, and when he was 4m we were on vacation and driving a lot and he was constantly screaming and losing the pacifier. But I haven't done it since that trip, almost a year ago.
