@sarbear: @Mrs. Sunshine: the Loreal evercreme was a fail for me as well. I would rinse it forEVER and it would still feel greasy right out of the shower! I stuck with it for 3 weeks and finally threw in the towel. Herbal essence makes one now too, but I'm too traumatized to try it. I think co cleansing is best for dry or curly hair (neither which I have).
I wash 2x a week.

Every day. If I skip a day then my hair has to be in a ponytail. I don't know how you guys do it! I'm so jealous...

@LindsayInNY: this was me for years! I never understood how people went more than a day without washing their hair. It's kind of like the theory that if you scrub your face dry it will try to compensate by producing oil and then your face is oily so you keep washing with harsh/drying cleansers and it becomes a vicious cycle. Well, i guess that's the equivalent with shampooing your hair... It causes your scalp to produce oil to compensate which makes us feel like we have to wash more frequently
The first month or so was pretty rough but dry shampoo definitely helped and I always did end up pulling my hair back the second day. I also switched to Redkin All Soft shampoo and conditioner which I love. And after a month or two of shampooing every other day my hair wasn't oily the second day. I actually love my second day hair more than freshly washed and styled. I still use a little dry shampoo but it's not totally necessary. I'm now trying to work up to washing my hair every 3 days. I like that I can style my hair and just touch it up the next day rather than blowing it out or curling it everyday...

@Mrs. Sunshine: full disclosure - the last 2-3 days are usually up-dos My hair is just exceptionally dry, it takes a long time to see grease. Maybe it's @sandy: theory, though. I've been a seldom shampoo-er for a long time now.

I used to have a very oily scalp and washed every day but as others have said it is possible to wean yourself off of that. Essentially oil production increases the more you shampoo your scalp/hair--I didn't believe it but it is true!
For the past few years I have been washing my hair twice a week (so every 3 to 4 days) and it is amazing how I no longer have "oily" hair.
What helped me when I was in the process of "weaning" my scalp from daily shampooing was dry shampoo. But only use the dry shampoo when you really need it -- ie, you're going out/to work and your hair looks greasy. If you're just around the house, let it be greasy. That is what signals your oil glands that they can let up their production, from my understanding.
My hair is very thick and wavy and used to get so damaged from all the shampooing and heat styling (and highlights). I still highlight and heat style, but only washing twice a week has made my hair so much healthier and shinier. Not to mention giving me hours of my life back every week (in time not spent drying/styling my hair--air drying is not an option for my mane if I will be seen in civilized company).
My favorite dry shampoo is Oscar Blandi's -- smells great and I love that there's no aerosol to clog. Have used it for years and one bottle lasts me forever!

@sandy: Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe once I have a LO and am on maternity leave, I'll get the chance to try this out! I use to ponytail my hair the second day when I was just going to the office and didn't care. I haven't done that in ages though. I do skip one day on the weekend but obviously one day alone won't help much...

@LindsayInNY: I asked my stylist about it, I have very fine, thin hair and I need to wash every second day at least.
She basically said there was no reason for me not to wash my hair every day, it was healthy, my scalp is healthy. She asked why I wanted to go longer between washings and my response was that it seems like the thing to do, which isn't a good enough reason!
eta: my hair is virgin (no color, no treatments)

@looch: That's interesting! Same reason I was it daily. My hair is highlighted but otherwise healthy. Just thinner and fine!

@LindsayInNY: I really think it's preference with our type of hair. If you hate styling and blowdrying, then yeah, switch how often you wash it. My hair is shorter and dries quickly, so it's no big deal for me.

@looch: I have very fine & thin hair too and I have been afraid to deviate from my normal routine. I too just try to suck it up & wash only 2-3 times a week. Day 2 is usually a clip to pull back the bangs, then day 3 is pony tail! If I somehow went another day, then it's ponytail AND headband!
